The UN's a bad joke all round, so I'd expect it's ponderings on the net to be laughable - will America be asked about it's intentions with ICANN, for instance?

Actually it would end the situation where US companies will seize a website for what ever reason. It is less likely when run by the UN. They may not be perfect but they are better than the alternatives.
