It all depends on how they will make it pay. If the charges are ridiculous then the service will get no where.

Do you pay for a coffee or a newspaper with a credit card?

I wish Costa would introduced "wave and pay". Nero has it and it is brilliant, much faster than hunting down the change...

So how's this work?
Are the providers adding a transaction fee?
What's the security like if I lose my phone? Someone could, presumably, be 'waving and paying' their way through my account.
Colour me sceptical.

So you are sceptical but you don't know how it works. Seems pretty irrational to me. ;)

Yeah... I'm sceptical because all I've been told is that there's this 'great' idea where we wave a phone and pay for something.
Which sounds [LIFTED].

Cash only here.

Or failing that, postal orders.

I have the same concerns. There will have to be fees to cover the running costs but if they are excessive then it could be ineffective. I suspect that they might charge the merchants though. It might be quite hefty considering the small size of each transaction. I would not be happy if they were for larger transactions.

You mean they have sent anybody to your house to explain it to you?
That's strange...

My bank card has a wave and pay and I'll never use it. It also interferes with my Oyster card. :x

I quite like the idea, it will be very useful for low-value transactions where I don't have the change - hopefully all this NFC business will put an end to the "exact change only" problem at vending machines.

As for the thread title, given the T-Mobile/Orange merger, shouldn't it read "The big three networks"?

I also like the idea but I do have my concerns. It also requires upgrading your phone. My current phone does not have NFC capability, and I might have to wait more than a year for the iPhone to have such facilities.

Most of the coffee shop & etc places near me have signs up saying they won't accept credit cards on transactions less than £3.50. That implies, to me at least, that at some point people have tried to pay for something less than £3.50 with a credit card....
