Do it right after Prime Ministers questions.

Any day is good for me, but just to keep the HSE happy safety boots must be worn.

Hugh Grant versus NOTW phone hacker (April 2011)

Quote:
I wanted to hear more about phone-hacking and the whole business of tabloid journalism. It occurred to me just to interview him straight, as he has, after all, been a whistleblower. But then I thought I might possibly get more, and it might be more fun, if I secretly taped him, The bugger bugged, as it were. Here are some excerpts from our conversation.

Quote:
Me Ah . . . I think that was one of the questions asked last week at one of the parliamentary committees. They asked Yates [John Yates, acting deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police] if it was true that he thought that the NoW had been hacking the phones of friends and family of those girls who were murdered . . . the Soham murder and the Milly girl [Milly Dowler].
Him Yeah. Yeah. It's more than likely. Yeah . . . It was quite routine. Yeah - friends and family is something that's not as easy to justify as the other things.

Quote:
Me So you're saying, if you're Johnny Depp or me, you don't deserve to have a private life?
Him You make so much more money. You know, most people in Dover take home about £200 and struggle.
Me So how much do you think the families of the Milly and Soham girls make?
Him OK, so there are examples that are poor and you can't justify - and that's clearly one of them.

Interview on New Statesman site here.

I heard on the radio, they did it to families of victims of the London bombings too.

Police staff paid off for information.

This one is really going to snowball.

None whatsoever.

You have to wonder - how long did this practice go on for, and what other papers have also been doing it? News of the World got caught, but what about its sister paper, The Sun, or others - Daily Mail, The Mirror? Is this a tabloid only thing, or did broadsheets get involved too?

I’m wondering how much this will snowball, and who else will be taken down.

It might explain why the police were so shoddy in their initial investigation. We need a separate police force with sole power to investigate the police so none of this self regulation or another neighbouring force doing it in a quid pro quo way. Police officers need to lose jobs and pensions over this.

This is also going to look very bad for Cameron having christmas dinner with the prime suspect.

I'm sure that all the papers in Murdoch's empire, like any large corp, share best practise and methods that work; so I seriously doubt this is isolated and restricted to the NOTW.

I doubt that they were alone. Though the other tabloids probably were either not involved to the same extent. The fact that other News International papers could have been involved should be enough to stop the take over of Sky. In fact it should be enough to divest him of all newspaper holdings and Sky News as well.

The main culprit was working for News International so the data would have easily transferred to the Sun, even the Times. If I actually bought the Sun or the News of the World I could boycott it. I suspect that many will from now on.

i think/believe that the release of information in regard to other lesser mortals (murdered or otherwise) that have been allegedly phone hacked is an avenue to protect the politicians and others of there elk using the excuse it happened to them (lesser mortals) so we must protect them and as a side line it also protects US (but we won't/must not mention that fact) ...

Yes but if it exposes the hypocrisy of politicians then should be excused. In fact this was only a problem because they deleted messages to make more space for new ones. Under such circumstances shouldn't the telecoms companies provide as much space as necessary automatically? As for hacking into the accounts that is already covered under the computer misuse act AFAIK. The payments to police are already illegal, it just was not enforced. The information was there though the police did not investigate because they were corrupt.

The Police are in just as much trouble as the NOTW as far as I am concerned.
