Oh I suspect that there is much more to come out about this.

Loads - the silence of the other competing tabloids has been interesting. I bet they are pleased that the light is not shining on them at the moment. That will change, I suspect.

Quote:
Finally, our leaders are outraged. The claim that the mobile phone of the murdered teenager Milly Dowler was hacked by the News of the World has been described as "truly dreadful" (David Cameron), "totally shocking" (Ed Miliband) and "grotesque" (Nick Clegg). Could this be the moment that Britain's spineless politicians begin to break free from the pernicious grip of the Murdoch media empire?

I’ll post this quote from the New Statesman as it’s the first time I’ve seen or heard NIck Clegg quoted. The BBC have not shown him in their main news bulletins, and he seems to have been mostly absent from what I have seen of the papers.

Meanwhile, this is worth a read:

BBC News are reporting they are closing the paper after Sunday's edition.

NotW to close amid hacking scandal

Quote:
This Sunday's issue of the News of the World will be the last edition of the paper, News International chairman James Murdoch has said.

In the past few days, claims have been made that the paper authorised hacking into the mobile phone of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler, the families of 7/7 bombing victims and bereaved military families.

More here.

A quick sacrifice now to save greater damage later on.

I suspect that they will try and set up a new newspaper when things have died down a bit. Will people trust them. It is an admission that they have seriously erred in their judgements. So it looks like they will try and go ahead with the BSkyB take over. Without the News of the World the rest of News International looks very vulnerable now.

Advertisers have also been withdrawing planned adverts from NoW and it's spread to NI with mumsnet removing theirs from the Sky network.

Yes I heard about the mums-net withdrawal last night on Newsnight. This was probably the straw that broke News International back. Without the NOTW the rest of the papers will be at risk. The BBC is discussing that they will just replace the NOTW with a Sunday version of the Sun, probably with all the staff from the NOTW.

The third party who comes out of it looking bad? Tesco, who made a public statement saying they were going to carry on advertising in the NotW about half an hour before Murdoch junior anounced it was being shuttered.

Dunno about you lot, but Sainsburys and Asda are looking like attractive places to shop right now.

It'll probably see it's highest ever circulation too, with people buying the last ever issue of a paper that has run for what, 150 years?

We are getting an ASDA store next year apparently. About bloody time too, I'm sick of Tesco.

Yes I am looking at those that dumped NOTW much more favourably.

Now it looks like 4000 more hacking victims.

I wonder if the replacement to the NOTW will suffer from the advertiser boycott.

I wonder if the Guardian will stick the knife in properly with an investigation of NI's tax fiddles. It might look like a suicidal strategy, but GMG's own tax evasion is entirely legal thanks to their private equity partners; NI has had to use its now rapidly shrinking political clout to keep the tax man at bay. And their potential liability is many billions of pounds.

I think Chris Bryant MP has a lot more info up his sleeve going by his hints earlier on C4 News.

I think Murdoch is wrong if he thinks that it will put a line under this affair. Newsnight just announced that an arrest warrant for Andy Coulson will be issued tomorrow.

I dont think Murdoch gives two hoots about Coulson. He's no longer part of NI. The same as Wade. If he has to sacrifice her he will. All he cares about is the buying of the rest of BskyB and as he has addressed the concerns about the independence of Sky news, it will go ahead. Probably later rather than sooner.
Of course with shutting down NotW there's also one less newspaper he owns and a great way of downsizing the workforce. As there wont be a need to have a duplicate workforce for the extra edition of the Sun that is almost certainly going to be produced.
