The dollar isn't any good on the continent... And the Euro crippled the Italians for a variety of reasons, since they were using interest rates and exchange rate trickery to give the economy little boosts, rather than tackle the underlying problems in the economy. My girlfriend is Italian, and much as she has fond memories of the Lira, she says she'd keep the Euro.

Out of interest, what is the slang for Euro? Here a thousand quid is £1000 The US have a thousand bucks which refers to $1000 According to Wikipedia, the Euro would have something along the lines of "a thousand single currency", which doesn't quite have the same ring to it... Not that it's important

Eh? I expect people would probably call a Euro a quid.

bratty, are you saying that if I was to walk into a Spar corner shop in, let's say, Milngavie, with a €20 note and tried to buy a loaf of bread, they'd say 'Ta very much, here's your change'?
Forgive my scepticism, but I'm struggling to believe it.

So, what, like House of Fraser in Glasgow or something? Which stores? Cos that's not too different from the tourist traps down south. I've a feeling the tourist traps in London will take € as well.

A sizeable number of shops here will also accept the Euro, funnily enough. And this is a village of less than 3,000 people.
