I own two. One's broke. But then, I also have a separates MD deck. MD was THE best thing ever and only iPod should have killed it really. It didn't skip, the compression was awesome and it was so easy to edit and make compilations (in fact, it still is, far easier than with mp3 on a computer).

These kids don't know how good they've got it. Anybody else remember using Dolby B on an SA90 and being frustrated by the lack of top-end and openess? But you still did it, because CDs were just impractical ;)

Back around 2003, I bought one. MZN-910S or something like that? VEry awesome at the time, when most people were still rocking cd players and few had mp3 players. Only the rich could afford the iPod and I wasn't impressed by them. Hence went for the MD.

TBH I think I used it for about three years, after which point I got out of the habit of listening to music. It was only with my iPhone 3GS that I got back into it. It was also a pain to use - you have a check out/check in system so you couldn't copy the song to multiple MD players - you have to give your friend the mp3 and they could transfer it to their own MD. Pointless.

I still have stuff on MD that I want to copy across. Must get that done this weekend.

I still use my MZ-R50 for live recordings. Teamed with a good stereo microphone, it's awesome for location sound recording.

We still have two separates decks, but they rarely get used these days. I used to have an in-car MD, too.

Me too! Awesome for chopping and changing compilations all the time.

I knew a couple of people who have those in the late 90's. Haven't seen one since.

I've had a couple of them in my time. May still have one in it's box in my 'gadget graveyard' cupboard. I believe I passed on some stuff to ChurchCat, who was/is still using them for recordings.

Where is CC by the way? Anyone seem him recently?

Jon

CC spends a lot more time over at the British Mac forums. He does occasionally pop up here, though.

I got one free as part of a gift thingy from a place I worked at in the early 00's. Still in the drawer.

Hi,

Yes I am still here abouts.

Still own several MD machines. Still the weapon of choice for many live performers. The walkman though, not so much. iPods rule the audio mobile market I would say with misc mp3 players coming in second.

CD and MD walkmans are just too storage limited.

I have one similar to Heather. I drove to Harrow to buy one as they were pretty scarce at the time. I wanted one that recorded. It was a stale in the car for a long time as well as fulfilling Walkman-like duties. I had a cassette adapter in the car. It was excellent. I liked the near indestructible disc - it was less prone to accidental erasure than audio cassette was. I used it for a long time.

The en iPod appeared, and a few months later I bought one of those, and the MD player was used less and less. It’s still viable for recording should I need it, but really it’s occupying the same space as my Walkman CD player now - loved old kit.

My guitar teacher has an MD deck he takes with him on gigs. It’s still viable tech for the music industry, but clearly for the average personal stereo audience, it’s MP3 players or nothing these days.

As I said, I still use mine for recording on location. We also own a portable DAT recorder (yes, really), which is superb. However, it can only run for about an hour on batteries when recording. The MD will run nearly all day, and has the advantage that you can skip around tracks much more easily if you need to. DAT is, by its nature of being tape after all, linear.
