Make sure you click the analysis link :)

I think I've only ever clicked them once or twice in the whole time I've been using the net, and that was out of boredom. Also, the majority are blocked nowadays so I don't even see them never mind click them

And I'm finding the recent thing of Amazon and Play recognising what I've searched for and displaying it on each others sites a bit off-putting (I'm assuming it's a cookie thing, might sort it if it gets annoying/is possible). And what happens if you're looking up something a bit saucy?

It's a fair point.

Why do online advertisers expect active participation? A lot of advertising is purely about brand recognition, in the hope that will influence you the next time you see it on the shelf; so, just having a banner there to be read or ignored as much as an ad in a magazine should be sufficient.

I'll go one further - annoying pop-up or skimlink type ads are more likely to guarantee that I will never buy that product.

The ads that really annoy me are the animated ones with sounds. There was one with a wasp or bee buzzing. That practically guaranteed that I would avoid the product. I have not seen it for some time so it probably has disappeared. As long as the ads are not too intrusive I do not mind. Though many sites put them over images or have a java script to run them.
