Which one did you go to?
I've been during lunch time and in the evenings, and at no point did they prepare the food for me to my specs (other than the stir fry). The pasta and pizza were premade and you just helped yourself. Or have I been missing out on something significant?

That was where we went for our archery Christmas meal this year just gone, and it was pretty good, and very well suited to what we needed.

Having just made my weekly batch of apple sauce for my daughter's and my morning porridge, I have to ask, why would anyone buy apple sauce?

When I used to lift weights, I used to eat porridge. Used to mix it up by having plain one day, honey another, applesauce another and cinnamon powder on another day. Kept things a bit interesting.
Buying the apple sauce didn't cost much more than the apples required to buy it and it was already prepared. Just made things easier. In the same way that I don't have to plant seeds, grow my own cotton, farm it, refine it and then use it to make clothes.

Different people have different skills, different values to their personal time and differing incomes.
It absolutely horrifies me that people who claim to be "skint" would pay for ready-made flat breads or pasta to make their enchilada or lasagne, or even worse - why would someone spend money on ready-made Yorkshire puddings or pancakes? They're all totally trivial to make yourself from just low grade flour, water, salt and an egg if you're feeling posh. The bought version would cost you hundreds of pounds a year extra - I'd rather spend the 10 minutes to make it myself, and then have a lovely holiday with the cash saved! Plus it usually tastes better when it's freshly prepared...
On the other hand, I can't weld for sh!t. If my car needs work, I have to pay someone. I know there are people on here who would be far more confident welding than making Yorkshires, and that skill could save them more than enough to pay Aunt Bessie for a year.

Dont forget many people have long days with work so have to rely on ready meals to cope time wise. I used to do the same mainly because of my memory made it difficult to prepare complex food. Though over the years I have managed to prepare curries with ingredients and curry pastes without needing to use a curry sauce. Plus with practice I can prepare a curry for a few days let it marinade and then when I want to eat prepare curry in 7 minutes. Recently I have been experimenting with thai curries, even spicing them up with chillies. I find that I can prepare a weeks meals in a few minutes and then cook them in the microwave when I need to. It does help that I can eat the same food all week as I do not remember what I have eaten before so can east macaroni cheese for a week.

So could I, and enjoy remembering every meal because I love it! Only for a week though, then it would get tedious. I have chicken curry on baked potato for lunch tomorrow, the same as I had today. I was going to make some coleslaw to go with it, but work plus Torchwood didn't leave me enough time

Yes but a week is nothing. I can go indefinitely with the same food. Though my body will react and I get cravings for something else. For me it never gets tedious.

I understand all the other things, but apple sauce involves putting apples in a pan with a teaspoon of sugar and a dash of water and cooking for 20 minutes. Given that you can't buy a commercial apple sauce that is even nice, I don't get it.

Ahh but you can from some good farm shops - anyway like Apple and Mint Jelly as it goes with both Roast Pork and Roast Lamb

I didn't buy apple sauce for its "niceness". I bought it to liven up the taste of plain porridge. Come to think if it, I wonder whether it was filling for making apple pie?

My treat to myself next year is a decent food processor so I can try new recipes.
