So my X-fi card went the way of the Dodo, and it didn't go quietly into the night. I didn't know about the Screech of Death until I googled.
No worries, I fired up the onboard HD Audio. I can't believe how muddy it sounds, compared to a (working) X-fi card.

I think it was circa 2000 that I last had an independent soundcard!

I gave up on X-Fi because of the cr@p drivers and routinely re-producible bugs in the software.

I've stopped using a sound card as well, as there are a fair selection of motherboards out now with coaxial and optical outputs, which I can then run straight into a DAC, which is going to sound a lot better than any inbuilt card, so long as you can cope with just 2 channel sound.

I found exactly the same thing. But the fact is, the best way to find out how good/bad something is-is to try something better and then come back. Doing this I was able to tell how much difference more ram makes (going from 2gb, to 4gb and to 8gb and they going back down to 4gb and 2gb) or how much faster SSD is compared to a regular hard drive (now when I use non-ssd rig I am tearing my hair out).

Yep, any time I need reassurance that my SSD was worth the money, I just fire up my spare machine.

Indeed. I think mine was a SoundBlaster 64 Value (I forget the exact name) God, I feel old now. EDIT SoundBlaster AWE64 Value to be exact.
