Just done some maths.

Norway has a population of 4.96 million; the UK has a population of 62.4 million.

The 92 dead as proportion of Norway's population is equivalent to 1157 dead in the UK.

No wonder the Norwegians are shocked

Hmm, it looks like Christian fundamentalist are just as dangerous as Muslim ones.

It doesn't appear at the moment that religion had anything to do with it. Looks very much more political. The place in Oslo that was attacked was next to the offices of the current governing party and the summer camp island where the massacre was was due to be visited by the Prime Minister of Norway. He (assuming the same guy did both) was apparently going for the government, and what particular deity any of the victims may believe in doesn't appear to have been an issue.

It was a political youth camp.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Why the reports about him receiving 6 tonnes of fertilizer as though it were a large, conspicuous amount?

6 tonnes is nothing for even a small farm, especially in hay season :?

And if by one man it would make him one of Europe's top serial killers. It just all seems so senseless.

Are there any claims that this was religiously motivated? I haven't seen any. A lot of people have "Christian" and "Conservative" on their Fakebooc profiles, but relatively few of them go blowing up cities and machine-gunning holiday camps.

A 1,500-page document written in English and said to be by Mr Breivik - posted under the pseudonym of Andrew Berwick - was also put online hours before the attacks, suggesting they had been years in the planning.

The document and the video repeatedly refer to multiculturalism and Muslim immigration; the author claims to be a follower of the Knights Templar - a medieval Christian organisation involved in the Crusades, and sometimes revered by white supremacists.

Interestingly, his Facebook and Twitter accounts are only reportedly two weeks old.

That sounds more far-right than religiously motivated.

@jim

I don't think it's just the Norwegians that are shocked. This has sent shockwaves around the world.

I'm at a loss as to how anyone can even begin to justify this atrocity let alone leave himself alive in the aftermath to even attempt to do so.

This event has catarpulted Norway into the mire that is" today".

I'm someone who is vehemently anti capital punishment. Right now I have real problems justifying that stance to myself.

I think Norway have a very short sentence for murder, around ten years IIRC.

This is multiple murder, so perhaps the sentences would add up to many lifetimes.

Something tells me this guy will not commit suicide like West or Shipman, but I don't think his chances or surviving gaol will be that good.

Isn't Norway one of those countries that tends to remain neutral? Imagine it makes it even more devestating.

Anyway, religion is just a scapegoat. Eradicate it and you just change the given motive whilst the true motive remains hidden.

I think the maximum sentence in Norway is 21 years. It's looking to me as though he decided to commit an act so appalling that it would be noticed around the world purely so that he could get his day in court (Monday) where he can 'explain' his reasons and the whole world will take notice of his extremist views. This is why he didn't take his own life....he wants to be heard and he knows his opinion will be reported globally. Perhaps there should be a reporting ban to stifle him but that's never going to happen.

They might ban any reporters being there and have reporting restrictions until after the trial in case there is a retrial. It is not as if we do not know who the killer is so he may even plead guilty and avoid a major trial, leaving his reasoning to be read out after the trial. Who knows?
