I'm not at all saying Star Wars is a bad film by the way, it's isn't. It's a very, very good film. However taken as a film, Blade Runner is better. The story is more complex and therefore more interesting, the acting is better, the cinematography is better although I'd accept that Star Wars was groundbreaking in terms of special effects and sound. But on an other than technical level, pretty much every aspect of Blade Runner is superior to Star Wars.
Aside from that, Blade Runner is probably the progenitor of an entire genre (it's the prototypical cyberpunk story) whereas Star Wars is good old fashioned Space Opera and hasn't really influenced anything other than the merchandising industry. Star Wars is a fine example of an existing genre. Blade Runner remains the best example of a genre it pretty much created on it's own.
And at the end of the day, Star Wars isn't even the best Star Wars movie, Empire is. If you were to put Empire up against Blade Runner, that'd be a much closer fight.

Superb post Jon. I'm inclined to agree with you, but I stand by the fact that Wars is more accessible to the vast majority of people and I think there's something to be said for that. Odd example and I don't know if this really conveys what I'm trying to say, but Inception - awesome film, but accessible. Had Blade Runner managed the same thing it would be a "bigger" film these days.

Inception was good but nothing resonated with me, I'm not still thinking of anything in the film... that last half hour was bordering on tedious. Blade Runner is a better film in every way than Inception IMO, it's in a different class, where the classics live, Inception is too bland to be included.

I've seen Blade Runner twice, can't remember anything about it.... can't have been *that* good.

I don't mean it as a diss to the movie. I'm sure there are people who see it as a massively iconic piece of work and it's changed their lives, I just don't happen to be one of them. It's only my opinion and is purely subjective, but I saw it the first time with a real enthusiast who didn't understand why I wasn't blown away, it was such a non-event in my mind that when I saw it again about 3 years later I couldn't remember anything about it. Now I'm sitting here struggling to remember anything about the film at all, I have a vague memory of a woman in a red dress, but that might be the Matrix?!

I think that you are confusing it with the Woman in Red

Blade Runner flopped on release. The audiences simply couldn't understand what it was about, and it doesn't seem to have a proper ending or resolution. It developed a cult status - rightly so, in my opinion - gradually, thanks to cable TV and home video rentals. It's a standout film for me for many reasons. It's probably the last sci-fi film that didn't feature any CGI effects at all. As a modelmaker, I could love it for that alone. I have found with repeated viewings, though not as many as a certain egg-shaped persona I could mention, the nuances and subtleties of the cinematography, effects and story begin to show themselves.

Wasn't putting Inception up as a contender for best film ever, just using it as an example for how "accessible" films can be great. Blade Runner is not IMO accessible. I remember a little more than nothing, but otherwise - agreed. Also, I've said this here before, but Star Wars (and many other films) are far more culturally significant than Blade Runner. Is anybody else gonna way in on Godfather, or other suggestions?

A bit like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Now there's a cult film.

As with most films the book is better, Blade Runner is no different.

I don't know what all the fuss was about with Carrie-Anne Moss. I actually thought she was quite ugly.

The fuss was among goths and moshers, all that leather, god I miss being 15... not enough visible angst on today's streets, those emos put paid to that, now it's the hipsters... jesus, these days I'm happy if a club sticks a Rage song on, let alone a whole rock night.

Totally agree. Prof, your point? It's late and I'm not my usual witty, intelligent self.
