Quatermass, Doctor Who, Torchwood (original, BBC made in Wales Torchwood) Blake’s Seven all did this. It’s driven mostly by story telling, but also partly by budget. If you throw enough talent at a story, you won’t need gimmicks like exploding helicopters and rocket launchers to get an audience. The audience won’t notice the lack of exploding helicopters because the story has gripped them. I hate to say it, but Moffat’s Doctor Who stories are arguably the best of the new batch. He does this kind of thing very well.
The claustrophobia doesn’t have to mean that everything is in a small room - it’s the feeling the story gives you. What is more scary - monsters under the bed or big planet destroying events? I bet it’s the monsters, and this is where the good stories come from. This is what is wrong with the American Torchwood. Considering Children of Earth did this so, so well, I am a little dismayed that the new series feels so, well, big. | | | | |

Can we please stop being treated like US and UK haven't had any contacts for the last 500 years? Most people know the crips/chips thing and the pants/trousers. NOT FUNNY!

Most English people do. Not so sure about the Americans. I remember a very real incident with my American ex not understanding what pants were... and it wasn't a funny story. I've not seen this ep yet btw - more informed comments tomorrow I hope!

It wouldn't be the first time UK accents were subtitled for the US market.

Another UK/US difference noted was that in the US lemonade is flat, and in the UK it’s fizzy. By a staggering coincidence: in the US Torchwood is flat, and in the UK it’s fizzy.

WTF am I watching?! This is wank.
It's more painful than the first half of season 1 of Dollhouse. I really WANT to like it and there are very small moments that I do, but overall it's extremely difficult to do so.

This. My only criticism is to do with the repeated "X is Y in America" comments in the most recent episode.

Is anyone still watching this?
I thought it started enthusiastically, and I'm kind of aching to find out the history... but much as with the previous seasons, I find I can easily forget it's on and really not be that bothered about it.
And I totally typed that in a Welsh accent. I think the snog was probably the highlight of episode 6 because it was proper funny. The explosion was quite cool, but it was annoying that she had to watch it so long for the recording. We all know proper men don't look back, and our Gwen Cooper is a proper man if ever there was a mother of one.
I haven't spoken to my grandmother about this, but I bet she's a big fan. I think Captain Jack Harkness is way better looking than Captain Jack Sparrow, and I suspect I'm not alone. He probably smells better too.

I'm still watching. Just a quick question. I haven't seen many episodes of the earlier seasons of Torchwood, but got back into it for Children of Earth and now Miracle Day. Does Torchwood have nothing to do with Doctor Who anymore, i.e. is there no crossover between the two shows?

The Doctor won't ever appear in Torchwood, according to Russel T Davies. Which makes sense, as Torchwood is a very much more adult oriented show than Doctor Who is. Captain Jack is rumoured to appear in the next season of Doctor Who though, which would be nice as the next season isn't screening until 2013, which is the 50th anniversary of the show. Mark

I am, although I really don't know why. It started off well enough. Gwen is clearly struggling to reconcile her personal life with Torchwood, and I liked the idea of setting up such a hateful person as Oswald Danes as some sort of Messiah - very challenging. Then, they make the point that Capt Jack is no longer immortal but, other than the lame poisoning attempt, they haven't done anything with that. It seems a bit too drawn out, like they're padding it out so it'll stretch over the agreed number of episodes. I don't find Rex a believeable character, I'm not sure why, it just doesn't work for me. Oh, and that camp director, the guy who shot and burnt Dr Greatlegs, is a joke; as is his soldier/aide - both of them are wholly unbelieveable. The removal of Dr Greatlegs, in such a permanent way, has spoiled some of the visual appeal too. Couldn't they have just shot her, and let her continue? Her character had a lot of force and drive (as well as the other, obvious benefits) but, instead, we're left with the simpering, overly-vulnerable, blonde bimbette. It's not really Torchwood anymore, it's just a generic action-drama with an occasional sci-fi gadget; and it's a struggling one too.
