Just set up your account on each machine, with suitably hard password. You can have up to 5 computers connected to an iTunes account, I think. That, plus don't save your iTunes password on any of the other machines. The Airs don't come with a DVD, they don't even have the USB nubbin that the previous generation had, just the rescue partition... So not sure where you get that from.

but not much of a worry any more Linux mint or opensuse is soon to be installed as i have now found the answers to get the internal speakers/sound working ...

Yeah, that's probably the right way to go about it. Download your OS and burn it to disc, instead of... uhm...

Isn't that what's known as cutting your nose off to spite your face? Seems a bit silly that you have a very easy solution to your problem but refuse outright to use it. Not even sure why you would want to not have an account tbh? If it's that you don't want apple "taking" your money then you still have to pay for lion somehow. In fact, why is it that you don't want an account? Not trying to find a way to convince you (I'm not bothered whether you have an account or not, it doesn't affect me) just interested as I've not heard anyone say that before.

Presumably MrStevenRogers is the type of person who wouldn't use an Oyster card or a Tesco Club card as it would be a large organisation tracing his activities?

It strikes me more as a position of principle than a technical one. I know several people who avoid giving away personal information where they can, there's nothing particularly unusual about it. Steven has a principle and wishes to stick to it, which is something I consider admirable. If someone has an opinion and is willing to do the work to stick to that principle rather than take the easy way out, That's something that it isn't really.. polite to second guess. His choice, his time to spend.
However, I would suggest it is equally.. impolite to suggest that a system which does not conform to one's principles is somehow incomplete or broken. It isn't, necessarily. It may just be that it's maker didn't share the same principles and, at the end of the day, there's no reason why they should.
(oyster cards, by the way, are pre-paid cards used to pay for public transport in and around London. The increase convenience at the perceived, to some, cost of the system knowing where you have travelled over a period of time, since the card is tied to a name & address in the TFL database).

LOL you most certainly have heard that before! You've been on here, and the other place, long enough. It's the most hated on-line institution on the planet I begrudgingly signed up for an account a few years ago to see if they had some music I wanted. They didn't have anything I wanted, but I had to give them my credit card to find out and to this day I have no idea how to erase my details! I've since cancelled my card, moved house and changed my name by deed-poll so it's not really that important any more... but I still have nightmares and want to burn them with fire.

You sure about that? The American Republican Party does after all have a web site, as do most British utility companies... Weird, I managed to. Used to have my CC details on there but with the PSN debacle I removed by payment details from as many online shops as I could. Amazon IIRC is the biggest one that simply won't let you not have CC details in there. Now I just use iTunes cards to top up. I suspect you have to do it through the account management pages in iTunes somewhere so you'd have to install that, at least temporarily. Give me your account details, I'll do it for you . Jon

Ok, maybe I came over a bit too strong.
I wasn't trying to say it was wrong to not want an iTunes account it just seemed odd that the solution to his problem was that you can download it through iTunes and the only answer given was "I will not have an iTunes account" with no further explanation (not that one was needed I was just curious as to why).
Equally though, (as Jon said) if you stick to your morals and choose not to sign up for an iTunes account you can't then say the system is broken. The system works perfectly well for the people who are willing to use it and for people who don't want to use it there is another option (USB install drive purchase) but it costs more.

Thanks for the offer, but I found it easier to change my entire life so it's not important now. I rather hope they've made it easier since then, but I will never ever ever go back and find out. It's not even like that was the biggest problem I had with them...

A friend lends his out, when friends visit London... He lives in Germany and visits a few times a year. Probably, he isn't allowed to do that, but the card hasn't been blocked yet.

I have an oyster card for whenever I visit London. I haven't registered it or anything which means if I lose it I lose any credit on it. I just top it up whenever it runs out by going into a newsagent and doing it there.

You can sign up for an iTunes account using an iTunes gift card, if memory serves. It's how parents let their kids online to buy games and music safely from their iTunes accounts.
Go to any large shop, buy a £50 card, and register that. Job done.
