Ok guys, went for my first proper bike ride on the new bike tonight, had fun but am super sore now!

One question though, should I be standing out of the seat when going up hills? I tried a couple of times but it just felt uncomfortable and I ended up slowing down and needing to stop and get back on.

The seat is pretty high so I'm wondering if I don't really need to stand for the the extra umph to get up the hill.

Being a new cyclist myself (30 years since I last rode in anger  :o ) here are my pearls:

- Ensure the saddle is at the right height. I was always told that you should be able to reach the ground with the ball of one foot with the other foot on a pedal. The "user guide" that came with my bike says straddling the cross bar should give you a couple of inches clearance between the bar and your crotch.

- You might need to consider a different saddle design/shape if you find it gets really uncomfortable. Talk to the shop again about that, I'm sure they will happily advise.

- I never could pedal standing, so I use the gears. Lower gears (smaller drive cogs) to climb a hill, larger ones to go on the flat.

I've been pootling about the local residential roads to get accustomed to riding again. I definitely need a wider saddle to suit my wider beam!

Didn't see this post when I check last night (iPhone screen and tired eyes), thanks for the tips. Yeah I'm fairly sure I'm going to need a new saddle as I'm in some pain today from yesterdays ride. I was attempting to use the gears to their full affect yesterday too, although I'm still getting used to using them.

You could always opt for a gel saddle. Very soft though you bum gets used it after a while so you may not need to worry.

Yeah someone in the office also suggested this to me this morning. Think I'm going to see how I go for a couple of weeks then decide if I need any upgrades!

Most are not like that. Though they are going that way.

He's just as likely to be foreign Scottish. Education is bad everywhere in the developed world, and kids have less interest by the year. This is not a solely US problem.

For the past few nights, I've been falling asleep late and waking up early - in some cases, 30 mins before the alarm goes off. Consequently, I'm absolutely knackered to the point of falling asleep in between surgeries.
