I think this is probably the reason why we elect politicians - so that the barnpot ideas that the rabble that forms the population can be tempered.

Quote:
The first "e-petitions" - which allow the public to prompt parliamentary debates if they get enough support - have been published by the government.

The return of the death penalty heads the list of demands, with dozens of campaigners calling for it.

No surprise that this subject raises its head. Vengeance shall be mine and all that.

Someone's got the right idea! One of the e-petitions is:

Quote:
Getting rid of e-petitions

Responsible department: Office of the Leader of the House of Commons

E-Petitions are going to take time and money to sift through. The government is cutting jobs and spending which is directly having an effect on peoples lives. Why are they wasting our money on this? Is there not a hospital it could be spent on? We want the government to shut down e-petitions.

I am against the death penalty, except for MP's who fiddle their expenses by as little as a penny, or lie. ;)

The title of said petition should be 'Ill-informed public make knee jerk reaction based purely on emotion'.

Oh wait, no, I'm wrong.
I forgot the judicial system is 100% fool proof and never, ever wrong.
About anything.

Yes too many innocent people convicted, by dodgy cops wanting an easy result.

Democracy is a fine way to decide how to proceed in general. However, one man one vote does nothing to show us how committed people are to their cause, nor whether they have considered the implications of the deed; voters are never held responsible for the consequences of their choices.

We can fix this deficiency with a simple test. If you believe that capital punishment should return, and are willing to overlook the certainty of innocent deaths, it is presumably because you believe that the needs of the many outweigh those of the few? In which case, you can demonstrate how firmly you believe this argument by hanging yourself, and thereby showing us that you really are prepared to tolerate a few innocent sacrifices the cause.

Only then will I take a vote for the return of capital punishment into consideration.

Please note that if you murder anyone before casting your vote, then you are not innocent any more, so it doesn't count - no ballot spoiling please.

I like the idea of a really short national anthem with just a few notes. We do not have to stand for long when we hear the anthem.

There are times when civil rights trump democracy, this is one of them.

Maybe we need to have a register that the only people that can be executed are those that signed such a petition? ;)

Saw one petition that quite amused me...

We, the people, are idiots. Please, for pity's sake, ignore us more often.

Yes while some here are more knowledgeable about many things I think that really should not be involved with the legal aspect unless we are lawyers. Then remember that people here are probably a lot brighter than your average sun reader.
