They'll be nothing more than a stop gap technology. What makes me sad is that in the future, children possibly won't get to experience the theatre of a big engine at full chat.
For me, the noise and vibration of the combustion engine is part of what makes it great; my car at idle moves under you, I hesitate to say heart beat but even just sitting in it at the lights with the car rocking and trembling makes me smile.
There's two of you who've been in it, I hope you know what I mean.

Oh yes!

Top Gear ran a car (an Audi IIRC) from London to Edinburg and back on one tank. Lots of careful driving and fuel economy tactics being demonstrated. If the electric car was capable of this, then I bet they'd do it.

At the mere mention of it, I can literally 'feel' the experience in my memory.

I completely agree. A shame indeed.

Oh yes!

So you have been in the Prof's "Passion Wagon"? Care to explain? ;)

That Guardian article is completely missing the point.

In fact both May and Clarkson both said that electric cars were the future but powering them on batteries etc... is only a stop gap and not the end product. It was more like a minidisc or betamax tape player.

Loved the end piece though! Brilliant bit of TV. Although I was cringing at the thought of Clarkson using his usual ending line of "...and on that bombshell, goodnight!".

He popped into my sister's pub for supper after picking it up and quite literally took me for a spin!

It occurred to me the other day that it could work if the battery was removable and you just put a new one in at a garage and they charged the old one and passed it on to someone else. A bit like gas bottles.

That would only work if the various manufacturers agreed on a standard battery design; but even then, the storage and maintenance requirements would make it difficult to maintain.

Hydrogen FTW! oh, the humanity!

Cue picture of large marine mammal.

Plus, I wouldn't like to swap my brand-new week-old battery for some 10 year old battery that has barely one third of the mileage at full capacity.

I think the batteries in these cars are quite significant too. Taking up almost all of the under floor chassis space.

Of course, I'm sure you've got some better rubber now!

On the battery front, if they don't do that, then electric cars are a dead duck IMO.

Unless they get some other form of storage for electricity. Like hydrogen... but if they use hydrogen they have to seriously improve the harvesting technique as it is currently very expensvie (carbon/environment/money wise) to harvest.

if they were hydrogen powered I could fuel up at work!!! though they might enquire why I need the piping extended to the car park

Though once you use renewables to provide that energy then you can have a cheap fuel. Imagine farms creating their own fuel from windmills to provide free fuel to the farm vehicles. The potential for selling the surplus will mean that it might become a problem if farmers start selling to everyone else.

So far, the only, and I say ONLY, electric car I’d consider is the Vauxhall/Opel Ampera. First shock: me interested in a Vauxhall. Second shock: me interested in what looks like a hybrid.

The car is powered by electricity via batteries. However, it has an internal combustion engine that runs as a generator, keeping the batteries topped up. You fill up as normal, and apparently you get 150 MPG.

As a stop-gap between petrol and hydrogen (which I believe The House agrees is the way forward), this is, I feel, the best solution.

At that sort of fuel economy you would expect the EU to make it mandatory. Imagine the carbon savings from such a change.
