What do you mean re new iOS?

The next version of iOS makes the requirement to have a PC or Mac to run an iDevice essentially redundant. Right now, when you first start an iOS device up, the only thing you can do with it is plug it into a PC/Mac with iTunes to configure it and initially sync data to it. With iOS 5, when you first switch it on it'll say 'OK, do you want to sync me with a Mac/PC? Or do you want me to use an iCloud account to get your stuff from? Or would you like me to set you up an iCloud account if you haven't got one?' You never need to plug it into a PC at all. In reality I rarely plug my iPad into my Mac as it is anyway, but iOS5 will remove that first mandatory sync.

well youll still need a PC/Mac to get your data onto iCloud, but once thats done you wont need one.. then youll be at the full mercy of Apple <tin foil hat time> locked forever into the iOS ecosystem MWUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH <exit stage left>

Same would be true of a Microsoft or Google offering. All companies want you pinned to their own little ecosystem. Hooray for DropBox, I say!

Local storage FTMFW, with a server set up to access data from anywhere. All located under my control.

And all backed up to "the cloud". You can have the best of both.

Yes but dropbox or any other such service gives you access anywhere where you can get access to your drop box whether that is wirelessly or via the internet . Millions of users will and have accepted the limitations of a number of companies ecosystems. RIM found that they could get millions of users to accept their ecosystem.

Yes but Dropbox gives or any other such service gives access anywhere to anyone depending on what security snafu happens and they do with monotonous regularity plus with governments as they are who's to say when they have a "proactive" trawl to see if your upto something your not. <supertinfoil hat now on>

I agree that security at any of the online services needs to be tightened. I encrypt as much as possible but programs that sync via drop box have yet to catch up.

So, we need a tablet at work, well, 8 actually, for a customer...

Requirements:

Min 8 hour battery life
Must run Java (full Java, not bastardised Android version).
10" - 12" display

Which kicks out all Android tablets and the iPad - neither OS has a Java VM, Android comes the closest, but its implementation does not include the standard Java libraries, especially when it comes to communication.

Basically, it must be a Windows or Linux tablet - the underlying operating system is irrelevant, as long as it has a fully functioning Java runtime VM.

Are there many such tablets available?

I suspect that they will remain rare. Apple have the tablet market sewn up. Could these apps be rewritten for iOS? Though I do wonder if they can be used without going via the Apple App store. The last thing a private company wants is its software for sale on the App Store for its competitors.

Surely it's time, then, for your customer to reconsider their requirements? I'd like a car that runs on fresh air, but unfortunately the market doesn't seem to make them...

That was why I thought could it be rewritten for iOS? There do not seem to be any disputes that Apple will still dominate the tablet market in 2020.

The requirements are often out of your control. Like for example, I'd like the BT Wholesale website to work on a browser other than IE4 but how exactly am I going to do that? Threaten to fire bomb their wives and babies if they don't make it happen? Until it changes, all resellers are required to use an obsolete browser.

I appreciate that, but if the simple fact of the matter is that the client wants something that doesn't exist, they're either going to have to change their criteria or build something entirely bespoke. Their call.

If you've invested 150,000€ in a system and you want to move from a laptop to a tablet form factor, you are going to invest money in a 8 devices, with a total price, hopefully, of under 10,000€, as opposed to rewriting the whole system to work in Objective C or Android...

The problem is, at CeBIT this year a lot of manufacturers presented tablets that would be suitable. Until now, only Fujitsu (an old stalwart of the Tablet space) has released one, but they've since removed it from sale again.
