Many of the same problems then, as now. Crime is a big factor now but when so many kids leave school unable to read or write and have a dire future this can make sense for many.

It is a good find

The home secretary, Theresa May, has dismissed fears that deep spending cuts could undermine the ability of the police to tackle possible civil unrest, and insisted the British did not respond to austerity by rioting on the streets.

Really now?

I do wonder how call-me-Dave will be able to justify cuts to the Policing budget if the riots continue...

By the looks of the age range of many of the rioters it looks like if we ended the summer holidays and opened the schools earlier much of the havoc would be over.

Wait! So, could it be the whole thing has been orchestrated by the rozzers in order to ensure their budgets don't get cut?

You know, I could just about believe that.

Watching the news this morning. At this point it seems people are simply taking to the towns at night to grab a free TV or laptop.

Just listened to Theresa May on 5 Live - the interview lasted about five minutes and her script ran out after about 45 seconds. Did she go to the Milliband school of interview techniques? I long for politicians who can think, and speak, for themselves.

It gave me absolutely no confidence in the governement's ability to deal with the unrest in London, and elsewhere.

@Veato - yes, much of this is nothing more than opportunist thieving. I wouldn't be surprised to find that organised gangs are using the riots to cover thier targetting of high value shops.

Thanks to the rioting scum in Hackney, my wife and her sister couldn't get to the hospital yesterday to see their critically ill brother. I did read that the Turkish community in Dalston led the way and fought back against these idiots.

Now you truly are living in a fantasy world if you expect that.

Yeah... Silly of me to have any kind of positive expectation of our elected officials.

Thanks for the reality check.

Video of a gang helping someone to their feet and then robbing him.

Nothing can justify any of this.

If the people doing this are considered human beings then I'm ashamed to be human.

Another lame Tory MP making a counter constructive comment:

Quote:
Tory MEP Roger Helmer has been rebuked by his party after suggesting on Twitter that looters and arsonists should be shot on sight. @RogerHelmerMEP: "Memo to COBRA: Time to get tough. Bring in the Army. Shoot looters and arsonists on sight."

From the MSN updates clicky

What an arse. There are many options between doing nothing and shooting on site, his comments will do nothing but add fuel to the fire. His comments just reveal his true level of stupidity.

Actually, he's suggesting violence, can't he be arrested for that?

If you bring in the army, you're effectively admitting that the Police force is not fit for purpose and can't control civil disorder.

If you 'shoot people on sight', you're effectively signalling that Britain is no better than Syria, Belarus, Libya etc.
