The price of things these days, that's aiming for the 'curiosity/cheap git like me/mum would love that!/it'll shut the kids up' section of the market - I suspect that section has a very short sales timeframe

So, no tablet operating system installed, probably a 400mhz processor (going by what other similarly priced tablets have), that probably means it sales run will be until a couple have been sold in each store and word gets around that it is a dud.

I would bet that they won't have a demo model sitting on the shelf for people to try!

I've used a cheap tablet with resistive touchscreen and it was horrible. I'd rather save £100 and do without.

But it might actually run Java for you.

It is Android, so no Java - only the non-standard Android RT

Couldn't you replace it with linux and a full version of Java?

I'm not being funny, but I've used the most popular expensive tablet with capacitive touchscreen and it was also horrible. I'd rather spend £500 on a computer with a keyboard

Well I've used a lot of £500 (and £400 and £250) laptop keyboards and they were uniformly horrible as well. You can't get proper size keys with proper travel on a laptop (or indeed pretty much any portable device), it's that simple.

Why not get a proper keyboard and plug it in to a laptop. I used to keep my laptops on stands as well so that the screen was at a better height and could cool more easily.

Tru 'dat.

But then you can't get a decent keyboard on any new machine. For example, spec up an orgasm-tastic £16k 12-core Mac Pro and the keyboard you get is just as sh*te.

If it's not a Model M, it's sh*te.

Because at that point you're stretching the definition of 'portable' pretty much past breaking point.

Depends how portable your stand was. Also a thin keyboard can be pretty portable.

The tablet isn't powerful enough to run Android, it wouldn't stand a chance with Linux.

And I used to always carry a full keyboard with me, when I took my laptop with me. But my current Sony is good enough, when on the road. At home and work I have a Unify mice and keyboards.

What about the really minimal versions of Linux. There is a version so small it fits on a floppy! I can not remember what it is called though.

Damned Small Linux?

I suspect the cheapest tablet is more than powerful enough for the project, given a million euros of software development.
