Analysis: Hewlett Packard's big strategic U-turnI'm still a bit unclear how Autonomy fits in with their plans. What is it that they do, or are planning to do with Autonomy?

Most likely they just want the enterprise software consulting bucks, which would give them the opportunity to sell some big servers and storage arrays too. Autonomy gives them some of the same sparkle that IBM and Oracle have, and that Dell never will have.

Exactly PC's and Tablets are a very thin margin business unless you are Apple. Also their results were poor so they want to switch to a more profitable business model.

I just got a new HP desktop machine at work. They're fab and miles better than the Dell I had previously. HP's just withdrawing from the consumer space (closing the Personal Systems Group), not ditching its entire PC division (or have I got that completely wrong?).

I hope so! I just bought myself a Proliant MicroServer and it's fabulously well constructed. All our servers at work are also HP, and they would always be my first choice because they really know how to build kit that lasts.

The gf's laptop would disagree with you. However there is always a chance of a lemon and I would get HP in the future.

Nope, their PSG division covers all their range of laptops and desktops, from the cheapo HP Compaq bling crap in Curry's right up to the the elitebooks, but I don't think they will close it down. I presume they would do the same thing they did with Agilent a decade ago when they wanted to stop doing science - just float it as a new company with a really dumb name (like Compaq).
