ITV1 has been named terrestrial channel of the year for the first time at the Media Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival.

The channel's success was announced on Saturday at the festival's Arqiva Channel of the Year Awards, now in their 10th year.

ITV1 has had particular success this last year with the period drama series Downton Abbey and Coronation Street's 50th anniversary shows.

WTF! I have barely watched ITV this last year and it gets Channel of the Year? Very little on it appeals to me. While Downton Abbey is considered very good, that is not enough to justify channel of the year.

I haven't watched ITV, at all, in the past 2 years at least.

Channel 4 or BBC 1 are much worthier winners, IMO.

I haven't watched ITV since a three part drama was on about a year ago, months before even that it was The Fixer.

Channel Four I usually watch about ten minutes of any given show and figure, 'I'd be better reading something', or similar...

I have only really watch Doc Martin and they are repeated on ITV 3 at the moment. The next series of Doc Martin is out soon though. Then I will watch it.

I do agree with you about Channel 4 or BBC1, but why not Channel 5? Gadget Show for one and other programs that I would watch admittedly US imports but still more than ITV.

I can't stand the two main blokes on TGS, they're insufferable... And when they actually do have something worth talking about (like e-readers), they skim over it in favour of an RC challenge or some other next to pointless crap

I only put it on in the background really, and if it wasn't for the female hotness I doubt I'd even do that... I don't watch anything else on Five

While it might make good TV it does not cover the topic well. They covered colour e-readers this week but LCD versions, though I appreciate that anyone with more interest will do their own additional research. It does give the viewer a rough idea whether the product is worth looking at some more. I do wish they would look at one top gadget more in detail. Though it might not make good telly they could use their website more for that.

I watched a couple of things on itv last year and up 'til then I hadn't watched the channel once in the previous ten years. Perhaps they've won a 'most improved' prize.

Does ITV2 count? I sometimes watch Judge Judy, but that's about it for ITV.

Or is it that no one will admit to watching X factor, Jeremy Kyle or This Morning. Most of these programs are aimed at a certain demographic which I am nowhere near fitting.

Not a thing in my schedule to watch on ITV and not a thing in my archive recorded from ITV. It has some shows that are very popular, but that's about all you can say for it.

I had a day off recently and caught some of Jeremy Kyle. It's bonkers and like a car crash, you can't help but stare for a bit.
