I'm not sure what you mean "wrong"? That is how it is. You can block withheld numbers by contacting your network but if you want to block specific numbers then you have to deal with the police etc... As for celebrity's numbers, they do get calls if people get hold of their numbers. A guy was sacked from Carphone Warehouse for giving someone Natalie Imbruglia's mobile number. She started receiving dodgy phone calls etc... What would happen if a relative of yours was taken to hospital in an emergency? How would they get hold of you. ::EDIT:: Just found out, some phones allow you to send calls from people not in your contacts list straight to voicemail. However, this does not block them, you still get the voicemail message.

Yes but that is harrassment or stalking which is criminal. I want to stop all calls from salesmen like carphone warehouse wanting me to upgrade or buy this insurance policy. This is not criminal and does not even have to get to that stage but I do not want cold calls. Or calls from wrong numbers. That was a criminal matter. I am talking about exes or friends of exes who might have your number and you do not want to escalate it to a criminal matter. Their mobiles would still get through. Or the hospitals number would go to voice mail. That is what happens with my phone. That is all I want. The ability to send them all to voice mail. I never check voicemail and have never even set it up. My phone will still register a number calling but not ring.

So if I was to call you to say "Hi" you would class that as harrassment? Remind me never to call you. If you don't want cold calls then that is a different matter. Things like this... http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/index.html ...are available for that. My point was that the guy was only sacked because she did receive the calls. You implied that celebrities had some way of blocking all calls that were from numbers not in their address book. I was showing you that they don't. As for exes or friends of exes then if they are calling you repeatedly and you have asked them not to then I would say that IS a criminal matter. Which you never check and so you would never find out so still my question holds.

If you were to call as developer of Doodle Sub that would be a cold call, and would be blocked. As a friend you could still get through.
I am signed up to all the preference services but you still get cold calls from companies that you have bought from or that do it from abroad so ignore the rules. As for people calling me I have no problems but with my memory I do not want calls from people that I do not trust. If someone has taken advantage of me because of my memory loss the police will not necessarily be able to do anything anyway. So being able to block all attempts to contact me on my mobile is fine by me. Also it can be changed at a moments notice where as doing via a telco requires time to set it up and an unnecessary expense. I can do it on my old P910i without any trouble.
People can still use my landline if necessary.
Also by blocking numbers not in address book you could go on holiday knowing that only important calls would get through especially if you had a emergency without everyone getting through and ringing up a phone bill. You could have your phone on only accepting calls from a small list of contacts.

If you have a jailbroken iPhone there is an app called iBlacklist which does the job really well. Had to install it on my wife's phone to block a couple of numbers.

It seems ridiculous that you have to jailbreak a phone to do want phones have been doing for years as standard.

Its the Apple way. That way they can introduce it as a feature later on.

Yes but this is such a simple no brainer and would be remarkably simple to implement.

Tbh though it is something that I have never wanted from a phone and never even thought it might be something I would want from a phone. The whole point of having a phone is so that people can get in touch with me. If that means that every couple of months I get a call that requires me to say "not interested, bye" then so be it. I would never want to blocks calls. If the phone rings and I am in a position to answer it I will do. If I'm not then they will leave a message if important enough. --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=53.851223,-1.530933

What if your number was placed on Facebook with the details of how to get a free iPad (24 Hours). You would either get hundreds of calls and have to change your number. It would seriously hamper you. If those calls could be diverted to voicemail then you can ignore them. Eventually they would stop but you would not have to change your number.

Android does it natively, stick the number in your contacts, and then in the edit contact screen check the "send calls directly to voicemail" box.

Thanks for all the responses. She's now decided to just change her number and be done with it.
