Manuals They are simpler (and so cheaper) to make and they give better fuel economy

Actually, with a modern auto there is no noticeable difference between the two. The Toyota Yaris, equipped with a five-speed manual gives 32 mpg* in combined city-motorway driving. With a four-speed automatic it's rated at 31 mpg* in combined driving. (*US figures.) And also, in the manual, you'll have to be driving for economy and staying away from that red line.

The GM four-speed auto box they used in the Vauxhall Carltons and Senators was superb. I once got 45mpg on a steady motorway run on the M40. I miss my old Carlton.

My old (1987) BMW M535i was an automatic. I did a tour around Germany in it (left Southampton, to Dover, across to Hannover, down to Frankfurt, across to München and back up through Germany to England. I managed an average of just over 40mpg, it would probably have been better, but I "tested" the top speed on the autobahn - after 15 years, it could still reach 155mph 8) My Renault Laguna 2L Sport Auto also made around 42mpg over 90,000 miles. Economy isn't a real problem.

Going home. Two patients took up 30 mins each, both depression-related. Thankfully the last two have been very quick and easy ones which have helped speed things up. Waiting for current one to provide a fresh urine sample.

Milton Jones gig. Saw him years ago at an open mike night in the Concorde bar on Madeira drive Brighton. Was quick witted and very funny. He coped really well with my obscure heckles.

Saw him at the Comedy Store earlier in the year, very good indeed.
