Don't you realise it is a ploy by the US to stop aliens arriving from space. It will damage their spaceships on entry and trap them here for autopsies in Area 51.

I suspect that any species that has mastered the art of traversing interstellar distances without being blown apart by space dust/micro-meteorites or fried by the various radiations out there will not be overly concerned by some pretty small debris in orbit of the target. The navigational deflector from Star Trek springs to mind. Still, +1 for the tech-tastic solution. I remember, I think it was Tomorrow's World or Horizon, suggesting some sort of tethered gel. The debris passed through it and slowed down a bit. After multiple passes the debris lost orbit and burned up. The trick was keeping the gel together (and getting something that would be gel like at those temperatures).

Space snot. Snot does the same thing in noses. Accumulating all the debris and allowing it to be extracted easily (additionally by fingers) or expelled via sneezing.

No doubt they would have had to deal with a similar situation on their home planet, and could even offer solutions.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.
