The keeping of DNA / Fingerprints is a seperate issue. Personally if you are not ultimatly charged then they should be destroyed within a fix period of time - say 6 months

IF you are charged and convicted they should still be destroyed after a period of time - say 2 x your sentence so if you were sentenced to 5 yrs in jail your DNA / fingerprints would remain on file for 10 yrs. Certain crimes could have an unlimited period (murder etc)

Well the thing is that even if you are convicted of a minor offence they go on the database for life. Also if you volunteer your DNA as part of a mass screening in many cases it is still kept, yet you were not even charged or arrested. Also how do we know that they are destroyed? We have to take their word for that.

That's why I would never volunteer my DNA for a mass screening.

IMO:
Guilty in a court of law (not just accepting a caution etc) - DNA kept for life.
Not guilty/never gets to courts etc - DNA kept for a short fixed period, say a year or two.

Okay so traffic offences should also have DNA records. Well want about all politicians as a precaution. We know that they are going to do something wrong whether we can prove it or not. ;)
