It helps if you put the link to the report but its no surprise that the iPad dominates the market.
Its all a question if it can maintain that domination. But Apple wont be that concerned as long as they dominate the highly profitable top segment and they can "encourage"/lock in people to their ecosystem.

I think the bigger question is if anyone is able to produce a viable competitor, or if they'll all just give up. Hopefully the former, because competition benefits everyone - especially us.

As for the alleged "lock-in", not really sure what you're on about there.

Sorry about that I forgot.

Yes I want more competition as it will mean a better iPad in future for me as mac user. Without that competition what incentive is there for Apple to improve the design?

So that it can sell lots of new models. Few people will buy iPad 3, if it isn’t an improvement on iPad 2, regardless of the competition. And even if iPad has no direct competitors, Apple is still competing with other goods for a slice of consumer spending.

Try migrating your apps, music, pictures, etc to Android. Music and pictures hopefully won't prove too difficult, but apps, and the data contained within would be more difficult.

Indeed, I think there was a report a while about that the biggest competitor of MS Office NewSuperShiny was the older MS Office IDoWhatYouNeedAndYou'veAlreadyGotMe.

IMHO I think you are totally wrong, the iPad3 would still sell by the bucket load.

I'd imagine that for any web-based service - Twitter, Facebook, email, etc - you'd simply log in using an appropriate app on your new shiny and all your data would magically appear. Fair play, you might have to start over getting three stars on every level of Angry Birds, so you win on that point. Although it hardly constitutes locking someone into an ecosystem - unless you really, really value Angry Birds.

But since you bring it up - how would I go about migrating Android apps to an iPod touch, or a Windows Phone 7 device (assuming there are any in the wild)?

Or just don't upgrade to Lion. It doesn't sound as if Lion will be any benefit to you if you have to spend out megabucks just to upgrade Orifice. :|

I am actually delaying it for as long as possible. I also need to get a new drive for cloning the system disk, so am looking for one of those as well. That plus a game that I enjoy will no longer work.

You can't. But what you can do is move your android app from your HTC desire to your new Motorola CLIQ, for example. You are always locked into the software platform because few apps are cross-platform/available on many platforms.

Keep delaying. I “upgraded” on day one and still struggle to find one compelling reason to recommend it to anyone else.
