Why Sony reckons it can beat the Kindle

It won't beat the Kindle or even come close because Sony will overprice it and/or not advertise it... And this is all before Amazon get the big guns out in a few months :)

I think that Amazon have this pretty much sewn up TBH. The company with the only hope of competing is Apple. Sony would need to access an established online book seller. That would be Amazon.

Unless Sony will be the suppliers of a co-branded Waterstones e-reader, giving the UK bookseller a sudden global audience.

A minor point: it looks like the Sony does not have the side page turning buttons the Kindle does. Having those makes reading on the tube a lot easier with one hand holding on to a handrail. Having the touch screen is really good though.

I agree with you. Though I suspect that the Kindle is safe in its own niche for now. Even though I have an iPad a Kindle would be more practical for books.
