I spent the day at the Chatham Historic Dockyard "Salute to the '40s" event. Lots of military re-enactment and stuff going on. Absolutely, but somehow they seem too sharp and grainless according to how the subjects would normally appear.

I know what you mean about "clean". I want proper grain simulation on digital cameras, like you get on a proper photographic film. The only way I can add a realistic amount of "grain" is through Photoshop.

I'd rather have a clean picture and 'shop it later. Any processing done on the camera is going to be less controlled, and you can't undo it unless it keeps the unprocessed raw. The thing is I am trying to avoid the need to go into Photoshop (other image editing applications are available). I do all my post-processing in Aperture, where all the file management is done by the application, but most of the filters are aimed at cleaning up rather than adding noise. Having to step out to another application for a final touch is not something I want to do on a regular basis. Even the third-party plugins don't seem to have grain in their arsenal. For Aperture, the Tiffen DFX suite of plugins will simulate film grain.

Like my camera I didn't actually know this until I accidentally left it on an effect mode I was playing with. Some time later I was shooting a spider and on playback the effect had been applied to all the shots. I thought I'd wasted my time but as I was using PEF+JPEG mode the PEF was untouched as I discovered when importing them. _________________Twitter Blogflickr

I'll give them a squint later. The problem with most plugins is they take you outside the main app, then you have to save back into the app with a new version all round. I hate that. Same here... I don't use the in-camera effects any more. I'd rather have the extra control that the PC software offers.
