http://www.satine.org/archives/2011/09/ ... n-web-app/Quick article on the new interface for the Playstation 3's streaming movie rental service's new interface (it's recently undegone a rebranding). 60FPS, hardware accelerated, a really nice GUI, 1080p streaming and a built in rental system. All done as a HTML5 app, no Flash at all. So remind me, why should you give Adobe money again? Jon

It does signal that Flash is not the must have it used to be.

I wonder if they've encoded the video into all the different codecs required by the various browsers, or whether it only supports certain ones... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTML5_vide ... eo_formatsUntil that mess is sorted out, Flash video is still the most ubiquitously supported distribution method on the desktop.

It's for the PS3. There is only one browser they have to support. I suspect that helps them a lot. Jon

I know the whole world doesn't own MBAs, but Apple has opted to not install Flash by default on them. I noticed an interesting tweet the other day: Link: https://twitter.com/#!/fraserspeirs/sta ... 7879782400

There's more to Flash than video.

True, but they've also managed to put together a pretty nicer looking interface with HTML5 too. Point is, this is pretty sophisticated online setup and I'm struggling to think what it should do that it doesn't because they didn't use flash.. Jon

Yup, it's also commonly used for really annoying adverts!

True, it's also there to slow my machine down and make it run like a dog. Disabling flash was the best move I ever made I reckon.

Disabling Flash also renders Photobucket pretty much unusable [edit] OMG! Firefox flies with the Flash plug-in disabled.

Just installed ClickToFlash in Safari, restarted the app, and Photobucket's fine with Flash off.

So the guy watches a rugby match for at least 80 mins, streaming the video (was via wifi?) and then wonders why his battery is low.

I still have flash enabled in safari if I want to listen to the radio or watch iplayer, but on firefox, where I do my browsing I have it disabled and it's given my machine a new lease of life.
I thought about replacing my machine because it browsed the web like such a dog, but the fact that I can still edit fairly large multilayered photoshop files without any issue made me think that something else must be at fault.

I've had FlashBlock installed for over 3 years now. I do like the irony of the link though, to look at the report on the new html5 interface, you have to watch a Flash film! Facepalm! FAIL! Flash does still have a place, in high end RIAs, but it has been so abused for menus and adverts, where it really isn't needed, that it has got a bad name. Add in to that, the security risks it brings with it - true, cross-platform security risks, it is a real danger to Internet users. But there are still a few high-end things, especially on the data connection and holding a connection open side of things, that html5 cannot do - websites that need to display information pumped from SAP over an RFC connection can't be done efficiently or effectively with AJAX. Flash offers an option in this direction, even if I don't like it.

I have had click to flash for a year or so, since it was suggested in these forums. The performance boost is nice. Not having web pages load crap movie type ads is wonderful.
