Roger’s Profanisaurus defines the Stobart as the slowest measurable speed. It’s the difference between the speeds of two overtaking lorries.

^^^that really piss me off. When I lived down south, I would often go home for the weekend and use the A34. You would regularly encounter lorries trying to overtake each other on a dual carriageway. Worse was when it was uphill!

Interesting, Germany is looking at reducing the speed limit to 120km/h (~70mph) from 130km/h, as this will be consistent with most other countries and will also greatly reduce fuel consumption. Also, the parts of the German network that aren't restricted to lower speeds is decreasing with every year. From here to Bremen and Hamburg, about 70% of the journey is restricted to 70mph or less. Villages and towns are generalls 30mph, but we also have lots of areas with heavy pedestrian or bicycle traffice which are restricted to 20mph. We also have "children's play streets" in residential areas, where the speed is restricted to walking speed (4mph).

Let's face it this is nothing more than a petty little Tory idea to keep the populace busy, along with the bin stupidity.

Yes I'd heard the autobahn limits were changing downwards - yet in the US, some areas are being revised upwards to 80mph. Clicky.

A lot of the speed reductions are due to the surface breaking up. They reduce the speed on a section each year, until it get under 100km/h, then they will resurface it. Depsite the billions raised in tax, they cannot afford to constantly repair the motorway system here. The same problem the UK has.

There are parts of the A12 where 70mph is a challenge due to the crappy road surface which is more like a ploughed field than anything a major trunk road should have. It starts to deteriorate after Brentwood, and gets truly manky around Witham and worsens on the way to Colchester.

Imagine what they'll be like after this winter? The parents just got back from the US. They were quite impressed with the road surfaces over there (I've heard different reports of the Californian roads being very shoddy). They did see some resurfacing in action - they skim the surface, cook it all up, add some new chemistry, pour the tarmac back on. Apparently it's working well.

No the money is going to bail out French and German banks, but they call it a Greek bailout, so there is no money for roads.
