I'm now "officially" just inside the "normal" weight BMI band.

I remember a professional rower on BBC who said they were clinically obese according to the BMI. It's more of a general guide more than anything else, so much so they advise that children and young adults should never use it.

jonbwfc I was behind her in a queue today - but I wouldn't describe it as 'bushy'.

Last time I measured BMI I scored 24.99. :D

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

BMI is a really broad brush because, as has been pointed out, it doesn't take account of individual differences. It's a useful test at a 'are you so overweight that you are going to fall subject to a number of life-threatening health issues' level but it's no use at all at a 'could you do with losing a few pounds' level.

I think BMI is generally good if you lead a relatively sedantry lifestyle. A lot of people in peak physical condition either register way too high (masses of muscle) or severely underweight (no fat at all) due to the nature of what they do. If memory serves, Michael Phelps the swimmer is classed as severely underweight despite consuming something like 9,500 calories per day!

I was on the see-food diet since age 15 (if you see food, you eat it) and stayed at 84kg no matter what I did (5'11" height). When I hit 25 I suddenly put on 10kg over 3 months (including a Christmas holiday). I wouldn't say I was fat, but I sure was shocked!

I eat quite a lot less now and go to gym 2-4 times a week for an hour. 85kg seems to be my minimum happy weight i.e. it takes a LOT of effort to get under that weight (costantly feeling hungry and having to try really hard) but relatively little effort to get down to 85kg or stay there (don't buy excess donuts etc.).

I accept your argument, and will rephrase as "try not to eat donuts."

:)
