Steve Jobs said he wanted to destroy Android and would spend all of Apple's money and his dying breath if that is what it took to do so.

The full extent of his animosity towards Google's mobile operating system is revealed in a forthcoming authorised biography.

Mr Jobs told author Walter Isaacson that he viewed Android's similarity to iOS as "grand theft".

Apple is suing several smartphone makers which use the Android software.

According to extracts of Mr Isaacson's book, obtained by the Associated Press, Mr Jobs said: "I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product. I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this."

Make sure you read the rest of it, if it's true, it seems he lost quite a bit of perspective towards the end, IMO. But that's understandable too...

You can't be surprised.
Especially as google's CEO was on the board for the iPhone release.
Steve didn't like traitors.

Personally I find Android (in particular, its ethos) superior to iOS. It's comments like this which make me want to contribute to the defence fund of Samsung et al.

I also find the "stolen product" comments a bit rich given some of the "new" features of iOS...

It is all part of the plan. Do you not remember Steve saying that 2011 is the year of copycats?!

I don't seem to have an 'ethos' on my Android tablet. I just have apps and services. Should I get an upgrade?

Android is just a basic Linux. I don't see what jobs problem was other than the fact he hates competition.

+1. When you're involved in something like this you can become disillusioned.

By the sound of things, the last thing Jobs was was 'disillusioned'. To me, it suggests more that he was very possessive of the iPhone and it's IP. With people who are very invested in what they do, that can often be the case. Of course the reality is pretty much everybody in the tech business copies off pretty much everybody else.

Let's not forget a bit of App,e history. When Apple launched their first OS which used windows, it wasn't long before Microsoft did the same. Apple lost a court case, and effectively lost the battle for the desktop.

They don't want to lose the mobile phone space in the same way.

They lost a court case because they didn't want competition. They lost the desktop because they didn't compete.

When Jobs died there was much talk of which great hero he should be compared to. From what I saw, Edison and Ford were the most widely cited. Given that one of them electrocuted an elephant to slander his competitor's product, and the other wrote a book called "The International Jew"*, it seems there is no absolute requirement for those who climb to the very top of the greasy pole of industry to be nice guys in every detail. A passion for smiting enemy phones seems like a trivial misdemeanor in such elevated company.

* available still from such worthy sources as the American Nazi Party, Jew Watch, Radio Islam, and Amazon (who will kindly gift wrap it for you).

The thing is people want to compare him to inventors and so on but, not to belittle the impact he had, he was no more than an exceptional marketer and designer was he not? As far as I'm aware he didn't invent anything, or am I wrong?

He's listed as the primary or co-inventor on 241 patents.

That includes a type of mouse, a previous invention, the ipod even though MP4 players were already invented and so on.

I may be have a misunderstanding of him and what he did but to me it appears he reinvented inventions.
