Nope, you can't do TDM over USB. I think it requires an IP address, which USB doesn't do.
Which is where FW > USB.

ooh, you can use it like a big memory stick? I didn't know that!
Unfortunately they're not going to have a USB A - A lead but it's interesting to know.

I didn't think you could use Target Disk Mode over USB, only Firewire and Thunderbolt. Might have changed recently though.

Ah, I was rather surprised. I think it would call for non-standard USB hardware to be included, which didn't seem likely.

Anyway, the problem is now behind me and they've not called back. If I go there again I'll be better prepared.

Bluetooth would have also been an option. Though Bluetooth seems to be a glaring omission to almost all of the non-Mac laptops I come across, meaning that everybody has to get some sort of dongle to use their wireless mouse...

Apple brought USB Target mode with Snow Leopard, when they released the Air, because it didn't have Firewire and Thunderbolt was still in the Intel labs...

Dave, I'm pretty sure that's not right - with the Air, Apple introduced wireless netboot which allowed the Air to utilise a Mac or PC as a netboot server and borrow it's optical drive for software installs.
I'm unable to find anything on the 'net about setting up an Air into a USB target disk mode.

I'm fairly sure I did it with a friends MacBook using USB.

I booted my MBP into Target Mode to use the CD drive as an external drive for their MB. (Both running SL).
