Driven over it myself, quite a high bugger when you're on it. Didn't exist when we made our yearly trip down South to see the Southern contingent of the family. Ah, those were the days when you'd pull into a layby to have something to eat and hold onto your sandwiches as hard as you could so the draft of the passing lorries didn't fly them away. Mmmmm, tuna and diesel fume sarnies.

Really? Damn I feel old now! I remember driving down that way when we went to see my godparents. It was always a nightmare as we got to dartford at rush hour on a Friday night, and the motorway went down to two lanes for the tunnel. There was no bridge back then.

IIRC there wasn't even a 2nd tunnel.

I remember there being two, two lane tunnels. ie one two lane tunnel going in each direction.

Are you sure? I thought it was a bridge in one direction and a tunnel in the other.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Originally, it was a two bore tunnel - each bore carried traffic in one direction. The traffic backlog got so great, a bridge was added to carry traffic in one direction, the tunnels carry it in the other. There are plans now for another crossing to help ease the pressure on the Dartmouth crossing because it's now over capacity.

Now it's a four lane bridge in one direction (south) and the two, two lane tunnels (ie four lanes) in teh other (north). Back in the 80's when I used it, it was one tunnel each way.

I was thinking in the 70s when I was a kid.

Actually, it was originally a single two-lane bore, one lane in each direction. It opened in 1963. The second bore didn't open until 1980, when it became one bore in each direction. With the bridge, both bores are used for traffic from Kent to Essex, unless the bridge is close for some reason, when the eastern bore reverts to its original Essex-Kent form. (Sorry. Bit of a geek about this stuff. )

In essence it all depends on when you used it.
