I have never built a system, is it that easy?
I am a little worried that if it doesn't work or I fry something then I am stuck..

As long as you've specced everything correctly beforehand for compatability, then assembly is very straightforward. Components and plugs only fit into sockets in one orientation, and so if they aren't going in easily then stop and investigate before trying to force it in. Give yourself plenty of room to lay everything out and don't work to a deadline.

If you are local to me (Northampton) then I don't mind putting it together for you. ;)

I believe Scan offer optional insurance to that if you fry a component while building a PC, they'll replace it.

You could go via Novatech and buy a pre assembled and tested bundle. I got this one for £428 =

The only thing that might hold it up is if your power supply is less than 500watt.

The trickiest part is putting the paste on the heatsink and getting it onto the processor without smuding it too much. I managed it first time, it isn't difficult.

Be prepared for scuffed knuckles, the sharp edges of the case are lurking, ready to attack the unaware. ;)

And by 'scuffed' Dave actually means heavy bleeding from razor sharp case edges.

You only tend to find that on cheap and nasty cases tbh. After about the £50 mark, you tend to find these things are build to a noticeably higher standard and you don't get the problems.

Biggest issue for knuckles is if you have a large CPU cooler and not much room to get the CPU power cable in easily.

Also have a look at

As that is a good guide

OK,
things have changed slightly - hae decided to get a new PC. So of the compoents above what else would be needed for a complete system - or would a complete build do the job cheaper? total budget is £750(Prefereably lower) - would be nice to get a new monitor but this can wait for a while - I have keyboard, mouse speakers...

If I take this rig as a base (because it's got a cracking graphics card)

AMD Bulldozer FX-4 Quad Core 4100 Black Edition -- £89.82 (eBuyer)
Asus M5A97 PRO AMD 970 (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard -- £78.42 (eBuyer)
Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C10 -- £37.99 (Overclockers)
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache -- £94.99 (Overclockers)
Sapphire HD 6950 1GB GDDR5 -- £184.98 (eBuyer)

£486.20

And add a few more bits...

Case: Antec 300 £42.98
PSU: OCZ ZS Series 650w £64.99
Optical Drive: LG GH24NS70 DVDRW £18.98
Monitor: Asus VE228H 22" LED 1920x1080 £119.99

Total comes to £733 - give or take a few pennies

Obviously different people will have a different take on the spec (swap Intel for AMD for example) but on paper that looks more than good enough to play any game at the monitors native resolution.

Do you need a (64-bit) OS though? If so that's going to be over budget unless you swap the monitor for a copy of Windows 7 and get a monitor another time.
