Most influential platform? Guess...

Who has been most influential person in gaming history? The late Steve Jobs. What is the product that has most influenced game development? The iPhone.

No, those aren't the opinions of mere fervid fanbois; they're the considered conclusions of 1,000 gaming-industry executives surveyed in the run-up to next week's London Games Conference.

Here are the top five in each category, as determined by the survey:

Top five people to have shaped video games:

  1. Steve Jobs
  2. Gabe Newell (cofounder and managing director of Valve)
  3. Shigeru Miyamoto (developer of Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda)
  4. Tim Berners-Lee
  5. Mark Zuckerberg
Top five products to have shaped video games:

  1. Apple iPhone
  2. Nintendo Wii
  3. Microsoft Xbox Live
  4. The original Sony PlayStation
  5. Valve's Steam

I've seen some champion-grade Apple-wanking in my time but this beats the band.

That's got be the most fatuous, oafish, bovine obsequiousness I've seen in a long time.

And Mark Sugarmountain on there as well... :? I didn't realise he had written any games either.

Mark Braben and Ian Bell?

Perhaps it's just a matter of perspective.

Deride them if you will, but more people play "Angry Birds" and "Farmville" than any "gaming" people on here talk about. Many similar little games are actually making lots of money. They wouldn't exist without the likes of Jobs and Zuckerberg.

I have several games on my phone inspired by his work.

One of them even has the original music, which surprised me a little.

You do know that Steve Jobs worked on Breakout for the Atari?

But, yes. A very odd list. I think the iOS devices may be educating the games market to an extent, but it’s not got the historical kudos yet.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

In general, that list is more about the delivery systems for games and mass popularity it seems, and very recent stuff at that :?

Well Woz did all the work and got stiffed on the money.

Edit: My nomination would be Steve "Slug" Russell, creator of one of the earliest videogames, Spacewar, back in the early 60's.
