Most do. London is easily the UK's number 1 tourist destination.

Can you cite a reference for that?

I can

The majority (72%) stated that London was the main city attraction, with only the French stating other areas and attractions, such as Edinburgh Castle and Oxford.

The top 10 destinations for inbound tourists were revealed to be:

1. Trafalgar Square
2. Tower Bridge
3. London museums
4. Buckingham Palace
5. Oxford Street
6. The London Eye
7. Windsor Castle
8. Edinburgh Castle
9. Stonehenge
10. Globe Theatre, London

Anyway much of the travel is also Business and that definatly is London

There are more businesses elsewhere in the country though. I organise the travel for 117 people at Speedo, the majority of people would prefer to fly from East Mids or Birmingham, but flights direct to destinations are reduced from these airports every 6 months or so. In addition, flying into or out of London to anywhere (particularly Hong Kong and the US) is much more expensive than flying indirect from Birmingham, Manchester or East Midlands.

I would rather see more carriers bringing their direct flights for business travellers to some of the midlands airports than add yet another expensive runway to a London airport I would have to pay a premium to use.

Unfortunatly much of the premium (business class) work is London and finance based

The company I work for spent £30 million pounds on air travel last year (mainly on BA flights) and as the head office is in London, they mainly use heathrow.
Any extra runway on any airport in/near London will run into NIMBY's like there is no tomorrow. All convinced that another location is the better location. None of them really give a toss about what is required for the future economy.

I'm a NIMBY then. I simply cannot see what will be achieved in building a new airport in that location. What will we use it for when the oil runs out?

The Peninsula's marshlands are part of the North Kent Marshes and now form a major part of two protected areas: the Thames Estuary and Marshlands, and the Medway Estuary and Marshes. The Thames Estuary area covers the 15 miles (24 km) from Gravesend to the Isle of Grain; the Medway Area 15 miles (24 km) from Rochester to the Isle of Grain: a total of 38 square miles (98 km²) of marshlands. Both are Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Protected Areas (SPA). They include coastal grazing marsh, intertidal mudflats, saltmarsh and lagoons. On the line of hills lies the Northwood Hill National Nature Reserve.

(My emboldening for emphasis.)

And unless they're one of a very select few firms, they don't need to be in London.

Your mistake lies in not putting lots of houses there. Butterflies don't write snotty letters to their MP when somebody threatens to put a noisy airport nearby.

I fell for that trick flying to "Milan Malpensa" once. Then I compounded my error by admitting to a taxi driver that it was my first visit to the city... Needless to say, I arrived late, and with suspiciously little money :(
In my defence I went to the proper airport for Frankfurt. Apparently "Frankfurt Hahn" is practically in Luxembourg.

Those tourists are dirty liars by the way. There's hardly ever many of them outside the queen's house, but Oxford Street is constantly full of them.

Global Head office situated in London and the cost does tot up when you have people flying all over the world. Thats why they invested in video links to reduce the the amount of travel required and you now need Director to sign off any air travel. Though a shed load of travel still goes on.

They're world recognised wader wintering spots, too. I'm sure Boris would love plenty of oyster catchers plastered over the front of the planes flying into his folly.

I register an interest. I live near hear. I don't want an airport there, neither do local MPs (all Tory, I might add), the county and local councils. Pie in the sky.
