I'm now officially "pretty old" which means I've had quite a few dates with girls at the cinema. Some are more memorable than others.

So question: what are the most geeky, most successful or otherwise interesting movie-date related stories you have?

The first ever film I watched with a girl was "Der Himmel über Berlin" in German with English subs at the art-house cinema in Oxford. We watched it because she seriously loved Nick Cave, and he appeared in it performing "the carny". Actually a really good film. She was a really great girl too (Nick Cave fan proves it lol) - shame I was so immature (read "dick head") at the time.

Got dumped by a girl during the opening titles of Titanic, when I went to put my arm around her and she told me she was seeing someone else.
As I was sat furthest from the aisle, I sat and watched the whole movie.
Movie dates? Not a fan. Haven't done many. From experience, they don't go well.

That's truly tragic - I feel for you

My second "cinema date" was at the first showing of Disney's Fantasia. She was another really great and very sexy girl who I thought was just trying to cheer me up after I was dumped by the girl above... found out much later that I'd totally missed every one of the dozens of opportunities she laid out in front of me... We ate a lot of popcorn. If I hadn't been so retarded I'd have been, err, well... not eating so much pop corn.

I think Disney / Pixar account for about 50% of my big-screen experiences, with or without a girl. Even when they deliver the unexpected, at least you know what to expect.

I've long since forgiven Sally. She had her issues.
I'm still nursing a grudge with Cameron though. I mean really...

Can't recall the first film. Think it was The Cable Guy. Might've been Independence Day. The one I recall was Jerry Maguire. Boring as feck and I spent most of it trying to peek down the poor girl's top.

What's crap is that I had to look up what was released in the same year as Jerry Maguire! Can barely remember the film but can't even remember watching the other two films in the cinema!

:( I really enjoyed Titanic.

Never been on a date.

Hmmm, strange I've mentioned this twice in one day......
The first date I ever went on was to see Stargate at the cinema.

That was the only "cinema date" I've ever been on.

Not so strange if you're referring to twice on 404 - your previous comment was why I started this thread

The next girl I took took on cinema dates was many years later. She lived in Holland so the subtitles were in Dutch. Obviously not a problem if we watch an English / American film I thought. We watched...

Lord of the Rings (Elvish with Dutch subtitles)
The Last Samurai (Japanese with Dutch subtitles)

and a few others I don't remember very well, but I swear all of them had great chunks in "foreign" - especially the anime

Now those were proper "cinema dates" where I missed entire battle scenes due to being otherwise engaged. Another wonderful girl who's now probably watching films with someone else...

I believe that's what's classed as 'adding insult to injury'. I'd have climbed over her to get out. Being dumped is one thing but being forced to watch Titanic is bloody intolerable.

You know, I never have. If you're going on a date with someone, sitting in uncomfortable seats in a dark room for two hours hardly strike me as an ideal scenario. Plus, it's a terrible cliche.

It's a cliche for a reason. It's somewhere safe and dark. Besides, the seats are often really nice - you just have to check the cinema first and make sure you get tickets for the back row!

How old are you? The first showing was in 1940!

Only had one cinema date, with my current gf- The first time, we just sat there, I was so innocent! I was wondering, "can I put my arm around her, I only met her an hour ago?" And she was thinking, "why isn't he making any moves?" We went to the cinema again the next day, that went better.

In 2002 I went with a girl whilst at Uni to watch Catch Me If You Can. There wasn't a great deal on at the time to be fair. 9 years later I married that girl.

I remember when Jurassic Park was showing at the cinemas and I'd seen it twice already. A girl at school asked if I wanted to see it (she didn't know I'd already been twice) and of course I didn't say no. What she failed to tell me and what I didn't know until we met there was her little sister was going too.

I was stood up on the first cinema date I went on ("Look Who's Talking" 1989) so I watched it alone. Second cinema date (with the same guy) was Beethoven 1993. Neither was particularly memorable and we didn't last. First movie date with Mr Red was "I am Legend" and I spent a lot of it squealing and hiding in his arm. That was before my zombie-renaissance so I still had a lot of fear. There was popcorn and a blue slushy and I splashed out and bought premier seating for an extra £1.50 each 8-) Here we are nearly 4 years later .....
