Ollie to me feels like the plural form of Olly with a missing s on the end.

Olly joined Olly, now there are two Ollies.

Ol - no, that's not a typo :roll:

My mate was named Oliver by his parents. Everybody calls him Ollie (and the written version) but he asked me to call him 'Ol' years ago to see if anybody else followed.

He's now known as Ol :D
