A survey, using innovative technology, has offered an insight into people's showering habits.

The average shower lasted eight minutes - much longer than previous studies suggested, using almost as much water and energy as the average bath.

The information was compiled from "data loggers" that recorded 2,600 showers by 100 families over a 10-day period.

The survey was carried out by producer Unilever, which wanted to find out how people were using their products.

According to the data, an eight-minute shower used 62 litres of hot water, compared with an average bath's 80 litres.

And, it suggested, that if people were using a power shower - an appliance that adds extra pressure to the water flow - then an eight-minute shower would require twice as much water and energy as a bath.

Don't care! I love a long soak in the shower.

I've always been dubious of the bath/shower argument. Eight minutes isn't particularly long and I could easily spend ten minutes if I'm very tired/achey. My sister seems to spend around forty-five mins doing various things. But then again, she has a billion and one products.

I spend around 10 minutes in the shower, especially in the colder months. I don't think that's a particularly long time myself.

I usually prefer to shower, but I do like to have the option of a bath - sometimes there's no substitute for a good soak.

I've been saying this for years. If I have a shower in the bath with the plug in, after about 2 minutes there is more water in the bath that I would use for a bath.

But then, I don't fill the bath up like some people. I've never understood folks who insist on taking expensive luxuries everyday which I'd normally consider part of the life of a princess.

I've never been a fan of baths. I get bored, my magazine/book gets wet, and after five minutes, I want to get out. Not sure why. Our bathtub even has jacuzzi jets built in and apart from a little titillation, I really get bored quickly. I'd much rather have a hot shower and then jump into bed and stay toasty warm, with my laptop on my lap.

I shower every morning, and I seriously doubt I'm using as much water in five days as I would if I filled the bath just once.

I do like a steaming, almost unbearably hot bath to soak in; but I have to be in the mood, or I'll be getting out after 10 minutes - a huge waste of water and energy.

The daily " in the morning & getting ready for work" shower is under 5 mins but occationally at weekends I like a nice long one and can easily do 20 - 30 mins

Haven't ever used the bath in this house or my last one.

Haven't had a bath in years, showers take a few minutes and you don't wallow about in your own muck.

I would conclude that the argument that showers use more water than baths is, *drum roll*, bollox.

As posted above, it obviously depends on how long you take etc. It's trivial to test if you just put the plug in the bath while the shower is on, but in my case it's definitely an indisputable fact that a shower uses more water.

A mate of mine heard on Radio 1 (or somewhere like that) that the optimum showering time was 3 minutes, so he was in, washed, rinsed and out in 3 minutes

I probably take about 10 minutes each morning, I get bored if I'm in there for too long...

I know many people who's bath consists of having a shower beforehand so they are not "wallowing in their own filth"....

There's also the option: shower 10 seconds to make yourself wet, then lather, then another few seconds to rinse off.

Doesn't work with hair JJ ;)

I am in, wash my hair, put conditioner on, leave it while I wash myself, then rinse hair and body and out. I take about 8-10 minutes in the shower unless I'm cold in which case I soak in the hot water a bit after I'm clean. I get bored after much longer than that.

I believe that's the navy method - at least according to a mate who was a Sonar Techie on Submarines.

When I was on the boat it was 2 mins max of fresh water to shower in so it was roughly as you have stated
