A mate of mine heard on Radio 1 (or somewhere like that) that the optimum showering time was 3 minutes, so he was in, washed, rinsed and out in 3 minutes

Same here. I tend to have my electric toothbrush going while I'm in the shower (I can clean one handed :D ) that has a 3 minute cycle. Let that finish, one last rinse and I'm out. 4 minutes top I reckon.

Then their bath certainly takes more water than a shower alone. :)

About 5 - 6 minutes here, and I turn the water off when lathering up...

Haven't had a bath in years, showers take a few minutes and you don't wallow about in your own muck.

I would conclude that the argument that showers use more water than baths is, *drum roll*, bollox.

I can get you the data if you want - I know the guy who's heading up the project.

I probably take about 10 minutes to have a shower although that's got more to do with logistical reasons.

The bath is too short for me to actually have a bath in without having to stick my legs out the end up to my knees and there's only 3 rows of tiles around the edges so I have to have a shower sitting on the edge or kneeling in the bath to avoid getting the wall paper wet (bloody stupid thing to decorate a bathroom with if you ask me, but that's the joy of rental), plus the hose wouldn't be long enough to reach the top of my head if I was standing up anyway. So, sit on edge to clean lower half, get in to clean top half whilst keeping below the tile line.

Yes but it's all relative isn't it. Give me a few weeks to ask the right 1000 people who only take 3-5 minute showers and I could show you the opposite. That's all I'm saying.

So what you're suggesting is that we fudge the results? What do we gain from doing that? We don't sell showers, and we don't sell water.

Besides, most of the time what people say they do and what they actually do aren't the same.

I never suggested you 'fudge' the results, not sure how you read it that way TBH. :?

You can, obviously, only work with the data you're given (that's what I meant) and, as you say, what people do and what people say are often very different. Out of interest, was your subject sample balanced for age and gender and across those who pay a standard rate for water charges and for those who use meters?

I do have a bone to pick with you though, it's because of you I was ankle deep in water this morning as I wanted to see for myself whether it was true or not.

I use less water in a shower BTW, if you're interested, but I may be one of the

This sounds all very much subjective and, unless you could accurately (and covertly) measure how long people take in the shower, inaccurate.

My time is seven minutes but that includes stripping off before, and drying and re-clothing after (I go by the time on my alarm clock).

We select our "subjects" on a purely random basis - we have a global database of thousands registered panellists and we select them at random to cover all age groups/income levels and so on so as to eliminate any potential bias in the results and to give us an idea of how shower use varies depending on location. Also, we don't usually tell them specifically what data we're after so they don't modify their behaviour because we're monitoring what they're doing.

As for being "subjective", the data was obtained by fitting water monitors to the shower for a period of several months so that we could record duration, flow rate and temperature.

I knew those web cams I installed in the houses I rent to young female students would finally have a practicale use :D

Anyway that will be my defence - "Honest M'Lud I was only conducting research on water consumption" ;)
