What, the airline didn't tell people about their new 'you will switch your phone off or else' policy, with the patented 'destructophone' technology to back it up?

Something similar happened to my girlfriend's Nokia 6100, when we flew to England in the summer. When we got back it wouldn't hold a charge, I took the cover off and there was a 3mm bulge in the battery pack!

It is well known, that the change in pressure can cause problems with the batteries, especially if the device is turned on during the pressure change - as most people probably put their iPhone into flight mode and not switch it off, before take-off, it probably isn't that surprising that they somethimes expand enough to crack the glass and possibly burst into flames.

So, the problem is no different to taking a fountain pen on a flight then. It‘s just a tad more dangerous.

The very reason that airlines request Lion batteries be carried as hand baggage. With their proliferation it's only a matter of time until this happens in a hold where it can't easily be extinguished.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I saw my friends MacBook Pro battery almost pop after he'd been across the Atlantic a couple of times. Couldn't put the cover over the compartment because it was bulging so badly.
It's the nature of the technology really.
