I've just loaded up the BBC website, as was confronted by a massive banner ad. It finally diminshed to a smaller banner across the top of the page, and was accompanied by another; down the right hand side.

Ads on the BBC website?

I quit out of it, closed the browser and opened up again. It's gone now, just the same hideous re-design.

WTF?

You didn't visit bbc.com by accident, did you? I'm pretty sure the .com branch has some advertising on it.

*shrug*

No, I have a link on my favourites bar in I.E. (work machine).

It was damned odd. The page looked like a cross between the old and new sites but clearly designed around advertising banners.

I know that the BBC's ban on advertising doesn't extend to content shown outside the UK.

For some reason, our internet connection here in work runs out of a proxy in Holland. Apart from being sodding annoying on any website that changes depending on your location, we also get adverts on the BBC News web pages etc.

May just be a location identifier ballsed up temprorarily in your case.

If I type bbc.com, it gets redirected immediately to .co.uk. It's possible someone has been tweaking the site and you hit it at precisely the right time to momentarily see an alternative site.

That makes sense, thanks.

It was a bit of a strange experience TBH, despite the number of ads I'm used to seeing on other sites.
