It's a pretty reasonable price - they were like £650 new and it's only, what, 18 months old at worst. IIRC just after the iPad 2 came out, Apple were selling off the remaining 'base' iPads (16GB, wifi only) at that price, but they weren't second hand.

Refurb iPad1 64Gb/3G are £399 in the Apple store - here - so on that basis €400 for the same machine second-hand seems a little high. Nowt wrong with an iPad1 - I still use mine daily - though obviously iPad2 is a 'snappier' device. FWIW the Apple Store also has refurb iPad2s (16Gb, WiFi) for £359...

Orange do one of the most flexible PAYG plans for iPad btw.

Also, if you can hold off I expect we'll hear about the iPad 3 between January and March next year, meaning the iPad 2s should drop in price :)

To a certain extent you can never have too much RAM.

Personally I would have said that 8GB will be perfectly adequate for the vast majority of users.
Plus, the price difference between 8 & 16GB is a bit eye watering IMHO. I'm sure you could find other things to do with over £150.

8GB will be fine. My Mini at work has 8GB. For the last week my iMac at home has been running with 4GB and I've had no problems. The only problem I've ever had with running out of memory was when I was doing some pretty intensive virtualising, and because I might be doing some again sometime, I'm upgrading the RAM on the iMac to 16GB (Where I can use 4x2GB thankfully to reduce the price), but I generally won't use it.
