I turn on/off WiFi and 3G depending on what I'm going. Leaving both on seems to really deplete the battery very quickly. Hence I've always had one on or both turned off. The only times both were turned on is if I'd forgotten to turn one of them off. Hence the frustration in having to move back/forth in between menus to turn each one on/off.

I leave the house at 8am on 100%, with wifi & 3G on all day, that'll do some texting, some calls, some Facebook/email at work, maybe a couple of games and I'll be home at 5pm with between 60-70% battery.
If I'm not in a wifi area, then I want 3G. So I leave it on.
Speaking to a friend on FB about this, he said he leaves data off as it's an Android and he's worried about malware exfiltrating his phone. He works in banking computer security, I should point out.

I tend to mostly check emails and I don't always leave the house with 100% charge.

Why would you turn it off?
Do you not use the internet on your phone that much? :?

I use the wifi at work and at home for internet on my phone. So I keep the 3G switched off unless I need it plus I still have BT Openzone as part of my contract and there are hotspots all over the place.

I think on the 4S, Apple merged Cellular Data and 3G so if you turn off Cellular Data, it turns off the 3G, on the 4 they are separate settings.

Also for the Quick Settings app, have a look at the support page. http://sites.google.com/site/natozapp/

Yep, I do the same. Much easier on my Android than on my iPhone. I have a widget on the homescreen which allows you to turn each power drainer on and off manually (WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, Synchronisation & Backlight (lowest, auto, highest settings)).

This is a fairly partisan point I admit, but maybe that's because there's less need to switch those things on and off on an iPhone? The whole 'my screen is .2 of an inch bigger than yours' thing can't have done the power consumption performance any good. I can't remember ever worrying about the battery performance on my iPhone enough to make me want to do stuff like that to improve it.

+1

I leave the house with near enough 100% battery, at the end of a normal day I'm going to be with about 60% battery life left. As I've said, I don't turn off Wi-Fi and 3G, my Bluetooth is never needed to be on so it is always off.

I could do with an easy way of turning off wifi. When I'm having a cigarette outside, the phone has one 'bar' reception on the office wifi, but it's basically out of range, so doesn't work. I'd rather use 3g as I have better coverage, but it obviously prefers the wifi.

I just keep both on. On the 4S, battery life is really pretty good. I always thought that 3G was more battery hungry than WiFi anyway. Towers further away, need more juice to send a signal. If you are shunting data around over 3G, then surely that’s more of a drain than over WiFi, which appears to have a much weaker signal.

It’s processor hungry 3D games, video editing and other heavy use apps which I find drain the power. You are all, of course, using standard battery health regimens, aren’t you?

I always do it with my iPhone, from new. It was the best way to get it through a day of average apps and talk use. As I only used it for e-mail, Wifi and 3G were irrelevant 90% of the time and I only needed BT in the car, for connecting to the radio.

It is better now, but when it was new, I'd be down to about 20% by mid afternoon, if I didn't turn off 3G and wifi - 3G was especially bad, dropping back to 2G only meant that the phone still had around 50% by the time I left for home.

I admit the 4S battery life is longer than the 3GS despite a bigger screen. Wifi and 3G don't seem to sap as much power. Bluetooth is always on so I don't have to switch it on/off every time I get in/out the car. But it I'm on 60% power because I forgot to charge last night, I want the juice to last as long as possible.
