I wish, then I could put my mind at ease, it was way too bright and certainly way too high to be a flare and noone launched it. Its still bugging me when I saw a similar light that shone bright but dimmed and it was moving in a straight line, thought "sattelite" then the bugger went back the way it came and it wasnt an aircraft or heli, too high up in the sky for that, unless sattelites now have a reverse gear or something

Well! It FRACKING WORKED!

Just been outside (at my Dad's house which is kind of in the countryside) and I managed to get Jupiter in the max magnification lens and saw the ACTUAL STRIPES of Jupiter!

They were angled going from about 10 o'clock to 4/5 o'clock ish.

AMAZING!

If I never use it again the telescope has already more than paid for itself!

Without the correct gear getting a photo throuh a telescope is seriously difficult.

Having said that... the guy's seen Jupiter in real life, so I'd say it's a fair bet that he's now hooked, so give it time and you never know.

I didn't find it too difficult. Knocked together a small wooden frame to hold a Canon DSLR to a 600m reflector in about an hour. The results weren't too shabby at all. It would be more difficult with a refractor because of the moment though.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

hehe :-)

I can now see a justifiable reason to spend £1500 on a nice 14" computerised telescope :D

I don't think it'll be happening anytime soon but I definitely improved at finding stuff tonight.

Also look up stacking - that is taking loads of shots and using software to get rid of the noise.

Just saw a meteorite coming down, while I was out with the dog (05:15)

Also leaned about Google Sky Map for Android last night, a great little app, shame it was cloudy last night. :(

The biggest Solar storm for several years is hitting us at the moment, Northern Lights can be seen in the North of England if there are clear skies. It may even be visible in London by the end of the week.

Looks like the peak of the storm will be at 14:00 this afternoon, and I have a clear sky forecast for the rest of the day.

Hopefull we'll have clear skies on the 12th - 16th March as Venus and Jupiter will be almost on top of each other.

Meteor sightings across Britain

Quote:
Police forces across the UK say they have been inundated with calls after a large meteor was spotted in the sky.

More here. I wonder why so many people felt the need to phone the police?

Apparently a number of people mistook it for a plane on fire.
