Some notable statistics

All Apple product ranges (iPhones, iPods, iPads, Macs) sold more in the last quarter than they did in the same quarter the year before. Apple broke its previous quarterly records for: revenue, profit, iPhones sold, iPads sold, and Macs sold. Their previous record for revenue was $28 billion; they almost hit 50.

In 2009, Apple sold more iPhones than it did in 2007 and 2008 combined. In 2010, Apple sold more iPhones than it did in 2007, 2008, and 2009 combined. Last year, Apple sold 93.1 million iPhones, slightly more than it did in in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 combined...The numbers are quite hard to calculate definitively, but there seems to be a fair chance more iOS devices than Android devices were sold last quarter.

Apple’s profits ($13 billion) exceeded Google’s entire revenue ($10.6 billion).

Apple sold more iPads in the last quarter than any previous quarter, despite the presence of the Amazon Fire (at least in the US).

Last quarter was the first one where Verizon in the US had the iPhone to sell. For that quarter, it sold more iPhones than all other smartphones put together.

Whether or not you like the way Apple does business or their devices, the amount of money they are making is just staggering.

Jon

That's extremely cool Brat. Makes me want to dig mine out; I know I have one in a box somewhere!

If I was Jobs, I'd quit while I was ahead.

Oh, wait...

yup totally staggering
and now Jobs is no longer here will they ever issue a dividend?
What will they do with such a cash pile apart from using it in legal fees in the ongoing war with google by proxy?
Theres having a contigency fund to cover any short term cash flow issues but really $54 billion in current assets is a bit much.

I suppose they could, but the bare fact is as long as the share price isn't in the toilet, there's actually no business reason for them to do so. No point giving a freebie away if people are paying you anyway...

I'm kind of reminded of the way Porsche are currently doing stuff. For people who don't know, Porsche owns the majority of shares in VW. For a while there was a run on VW shares, such that at one point VW was the most highly valued company on planet earth, which made Porsche the richest company on planet earth. POrsche didn't go mad buying up rivals and throwing money at stuff, they basically put most of it in the bank and sat on it. Now the price of VW shares have calmed down a bit, Porsche is merely Very Rich. But it also means that, unless the world economy genuinely collapses (and I mean back to hitting each other with sticks collapses) Porsche are always going to be financially viable. I suspect Apple are doing soemthing of the same thing. yes, they have a huge pile of cash. And they will always need a day to day contingency fund. But I suspect they think as much as anyone that at some point things are going to get bumpy. The fund they're building isn't one to get them over a short term issue, it's to insulate them from a possibly long term decline. There have been long periods in the past when Apple has been 'a week from going under', and I suspect their corporate culture is now to never let that happen again. and the fund they're building will make sure of that. They can ride out not just a bad year, but a bad entire generation of products if they have to.

It is the 4th most profitable quarter in history

They are the only non-oil company in the table in the article.

Staggering

One perhaps overlooked aspect of Apple’s refusal to pay dividends has to do with the fact that a large portion of the company’s cash is located overseas. According to a recent 10-K filing, more than 50 percent of Apple’s cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities are held by foreign subsidiaries.

This money is “subject to U.S. income taxation on repatriation to the U.S.” – another reason not to hand out dividends.

According to press reports, it is estimated that the company would be on the hook for more than $5-bilion in U.S. taxes if it tried to repatriate this foreign-held cash for a dividend payment

this would explain partly why theres no dividend payout. Thats a big tax demand even with the cash Apple have!

Hmm. A firm that builds desirable products vs. an advertising company.
No real surprise, I suppose.

When I was in Uni, I was very close to sinking my student loan into Apple shares. This was, of course, the period of time under Sculley - clones, Michael Dell saying he'd shut it down, the initial return of Jobs. Share prices were sooo cheap.
This is also my number one reason I need someone to invent time travel.

I'd be pretty damned happy if I had 1% the financial success of Google. I'd be able to afford that hollowed out volcano and an army of sailor senshi to fight for me, which would be really damned cool.

"Massively successful company isn't as successful as Apple". Ouch indeed.
