looks like a beer barrel ....

That's weird because I was looking at a beer barrel the other day and thought to myself, wow, that looks like the spiralling arms of a faraway barred galaxy cluster.

It's because reframing, farce and surprise are basic ingredients in humour.

There are two jokes here:
  1. By simply reversing the order of the two objects (reframing) , Chris has created a scenario that is not only surprising, but is also farcical.
  2. The farce is also surprising in itself, as it comes from a forumite who is usually rather logical.
This helps the statement to be funny for longer because the hearer is not just laughing at one joke. When the laughter at part one starts to fade, the hearer's mind moves to the next part which, being fresh, is still funny. This also allows the first part space to become fresh again; this can cause the humour (and laughter) to repeat over and over.

Does that help?

Really pulled my thumb out the past week in terms of getting things done, registered as a developer mentor for Imagine cup, registered for the Blackberry market access (free currently and on successful submission they will give you a Playbook), started looking at Android development a lot more, and that was just the past 2 days outside of work

The connection is that, in lacloss' opinion, the barred spiral galaxy looks somewhat like a barrel. It doesn't have to look like a barrel at all. All that is required is an established or proposed connection between the two.

Once the link was established, it formed a good enough basis for a Re-frame. Chris then changed lacloss' statement around to form the joke.

This post will make me curious for an extremely long time trying to understand it, to me its as though people have made a joke made from nothing, or pretending something is something else which isint atall, it doesnt make any sense atall, not the slightest bit funny just very confusing

Its as though someones said "hey that car looks like hitlers moustache" when clearly no car can even possibly look like that :x and then everyone found the car comment really funny when it shoudnt be

very odd...
