When the best defense you can muster to justify why you did something is "well it's not against the law", one must ask oneself serious questions.
In his case about taking a long walk off a short pier.

*defence. I might also suggest that English Law has long-subscribed to the concept of negative liberty, i.e. unless an activity is specifically prohibited by law then it's perfectly legal.

I might suggest in response that while your point is correct, setting your standards of behaviour to 'slightly above that which will get me arrested' is a pretty poor level to aspire to. Jon

Although still a higher standard than some aspire to. Many seem to consider "not getting caught" to be close enough.
