Given a typical SMS costs a thousandth of a penny or so to send (for the carrier), it isn't really a surprise that they are miffed that the revenue scheme is disappearing... Storing the messages and doing the billing probably costs them more than the actual message...

Most people on contracts don't use anywhere close to their allowance of text messages. It actually suits the networks for customers not to use them. It's the pay as you go customers reduction that's costing them.

This. I'll bet the haven't taken the unused, prepaid, text allowance into consideration when they came up with that number. Still, adapt or die.

The way I see it SMS cost me nothing and I still don't use it. I get unlimited SMS on my contract and only use about 100 of them a month. I use IM apps because they provide more functionality than dumb sms. Combination of email and IM covers 95% of my messaging needs...

I get around 50 free texts on my contract, but I generally send about 2 - 3 a month, tops.
